As a relative newbie, what are people's standards when they say a fic is doing badly at this point? No kudos? Only one kudos per fifty hits? Only one comment? No comments? I would be interested to know what people think is good so that I know how my fics are doing!

That would depend entirely on whether your fandom has only one person in the world who wants to read from it, or 10, or 1000.

Any blatant coal out there? Who should we feel bad for? Some quick and enterprising coalies might know their fandoms and be able to squeeze out something nice but short before the Madness collection closes in about 7 hours.

Jesus fuck do I ever suck at it. Got this lovely long ship fic here lovingly tailored for me and I can't think of a single thing to say about it that doesn't make me cringe right out of my skin.

So yeah, if there's a coalie out there who wrote rarepare fic for a historical/fantasy canon, brace yourself for the bin fire of my appreciation and know that I thought your fic was the tits.

Retiring from Yuletide?

I'm thinking seriously this might have been my last Yuletide. I'm not angry about anything, or even particularly sad, just dissatisfied and vaguely bored. I had a horrendously bad match as a writer, but managed to muddle through to produce something my recip liked but didn't love. I hated my own gift, it was almost comically bad. And then, when I went through the collection, there were fewer fandoms than ever that I recognised, I opened up about ten, then closed most of those tabs without opening any of the fics once I read the summaries. Maybe Yuletide just isn't for me any more.

Anyone else feeling similarly blah?

I briefly complained about my NOTP getting a lot of fic to one of my friends. It was a brief thing, but they went and looked into, made a jab of their own, how they could never get into this dynamic... and then settled into to read the longest, blandest (imo) option available because, well, other people have been reccing it!

This friend has been brushing off my attempts at getting them into this fandom. My fic is going down like a lead balloon, and they know it. They haven’t interacted with any of my fic in months, even in fandoms we still share. All of these independently are fine or a manageable amount of sucking, but all brought together my feelings are hurt. Even more so now that I’ve written out the brat. Another claw curls in on the monkey paw, I guess.

I know this is YT, so to be expected perhaps, but I suppose I'm a tiny bit sad because I wrote 3 mid-length fics (between 4.5k and 9k) that I spent a lot of time on and am actually proud of, and I got enthusiastic comments from all three recips, so I assume that they aren't horrible and that perhaps one or the other person aside from the recips might like them too ... except there's very little in terms of hits/kudos/comments. I'm super glad that I seem to have made my recips happy with what I wrote, though, so there's that.

It’s been 25 hours, Christians are doing their stuff, it’s the middle of Hanukkah, and everyone else in between is either working since it is the middle of the week or on vacation with obligations. Day 1 is for getting the comments they have to leave on their gifts. As we move forward, people will probably start with the shortest fics first and move up. Most people won’t see casual traffic until the weekend. Also this is Yuletide, where fandoms are small.

I did two stories this time round, one of which I'm fine with, one of which stalled horribly and ended up as 1k of dross.

The dross got a recip comment that was very much Thank You For Writing I Guess and I am surprised they managed to be even that nice.

Can I get away with just orphaning the coal so no-one knows it was me?
