C! True Shaking Stories

People who shook and were worried, alarmed, excited, and confused: what did the end result look like?

The just over 1k, completely untagged fic is a work of fucking genius! I stand corrected.

But meanwhile the just over 1k, heavily tagged fic which raised my hopes for everything I like is a work of solid coal, and I stand disappointed.

The close to 1k story I was worried about was great, as were the other close to 1k stories in the collection I read. I pledge to no longer worry based on word count.

this author took a lot of my likes and incorporated them into the fic, as I could see via the tags! However, they didn’t seem to understand the reasons I like those things, and it was very bland.

Based on shaking I could tell exactly what prompt my author had written for, and I was worried the just-over-1k word count wouldn't be enough to do it justice and would leave me unsatisfied.

Coal, I was a fool. It turns out it was exactly the right length, and one of the best fics I've ever gotten.

I was looking forward to about 1k of my OTP. I expected a nice dandy scene for them. Something unfancy and average.

I got several thousand words of the author laying out worldbuilding ideas and experimental story telling. It's clear a lot of work went into this.

I'd have preferred the 1k no work version.

If this is me, I thought 1k of OTP would fall flat, and wasn't sure if you wanted shippy fic or family/friendship fic.

(I really like this comment over a generic thank you. At least I know what didn't work and why)

When I shook my story was barely over 1k words with no tags, so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out I got over 5k on Christmas Day. I shouldn't have been. I think I'd have liked to read the 1k story instead.

The 1k version was just the first scene of the 5k one.

I was kind of bummed when I first shook, because tags were minimal and the story was under 2k. (I like short fic a lot, and people can tag however they want! But in combination it made me a little wary. /o\)

BUT my gift has turned out to be totally excellent - spare but elegant style, perfectly suited to the POV character, and captured the twisty complexity of the central relationship beautifully! I'm so happy I got it. :D

I was very excited by my tags, but liked the work less than I thought. It's totally my fault- looking back at my prompts, I wasn't specific enough for the author to know X things- i.e. I hadn't requested shipfic or a specific gender.

But they got 3 of my big likes in there and it had my requested characters so I left an enthusiastic comment- it wasn't badly done at all and they clearly put work into it.

I shook and was excited, saw the fandom and was disappointed, read the thing and was happy. It was Good Fic, the only thing I wanted was more of it.

I was disappointed when I shook, cause it looked like my author had gone with my most gen-out, canon-compliant 'if you really don't want to write an AU' prompt. And that is exactly what they did - but they did it perfectly, so I ended up happy anyhow!

I thought my gift might be twee and not get into what I actually like about the characters, and instead it's everything I wanted and really well written to boot. I'm thrilled!

Ooh... I wonder if this is about me! I doubt it, my recip doesn't seem like a coalie, but it's possible.

I’m the coalie that said I might nope out of reading a fic with alarming-to-me tags on it combined with my bad CNTW experiences in the past.

I read it and didn’t directly hit DNWs but....it wasn’t to my taste at all and managed to work in a lot of things that (to me) seem risky to center a plot around when none of prompts mention it. They didn’t tag for the main kink at all even though they did for other kinks so I would assume that is the CNTW side of fandom they fall on: surprise X which is referenced and remembered multiple times, minor Y and Z tagged even though I don’t remember them coming up. It was boring because the authors kinks are not mine, and then distasteful because they enjoy the polar opposite of why I like the characters dynamic apparently.

I commented with the one or two things I agreed with and am leaving it at that. The good part is that it inspired me to reconsume the canon to remember why I like it so much and that helped me wash my hands of the gift.

They didn’t have to write to your prompts at all, so it doesn’t matter whether they centered their fic on their own idea and not something 100% prompted by you. It’s not a ~risk, it’s ODAO.

It was a treat and tagged as such.

Uh, writing CNTW kinky fic for someone that a) didn’t ask for that kink (or possibly b) has the kink come near their DNWs) is very risky to me coalie even for a main assignment but ymmv on that one. The recip can’t report you to the mods but there is no world in which you could be shocked if they rejected, nevermind not commenting!?

A TREAT?????? Yeah no excuse on the authors part. They shouldn’t have written the kink but they definitely should have tagged for it if they already had the foresight to use the tags that worried the recip to begin with.

It's a risk if you care about pleasing the person you're writing for. It's becoming sadly obvious to me that some people don't and therefore yes, you're right, for people like that it's not a risk. I just can't imagine being one of them.

I'm sorry it wasn't to your taste but glad you gave it a chance.

Very strange to give unrequested (hard?) kink imo but some people will do it.
