People absolutely do notice that shit, though? There are examples in that thread of people being like "yeah, my gift changed after I read it the first time."

Many years ago I got a yuletide fic that was meant to be a crossover. (No issue there, as I'd mentioned being good with crossovers.) Problem was that the story made no sense at all and basically sucked. I just filed it away as a miss, and never looked at it again.

Until earlier this yuletide season when there was a discussion of the worst fic you'd ever gotten. I went back to see if it really was as bad as I remembered. Surprise, it was an entirely different story. It was still tagged as a crossover, but the crossover elements were gone. I have no idea when the author swapped it out. Sadly, the story really wasn't any better.
