Should I orphan the coal?

I did two stories this time round, one of which I'm fine with, one of which stalled horribly and ended up as 1k of dross.

The dross got a recip comment that was very much Thank You For Writing I Guess and I am surprised they managed to be even that nice.

Can I get away with just orphaning the coal so no-one knows it was me?

Sure, if you want to. Or put it in an anon collection - the last update fixed the invite to collection exploit.

Yes, you can orphan before reveals.

You can also add to another anon collection if you want to maintain control over it but have it stay anon. (And I think the exploit where someone could invite your work to a collection and see who you are has been fixed?)

It's in this Admin post:

[AO3-5785] - Owners of collections were previously able to add works in other, anonymous collections to their own, which enabled them to see the work's creator. We've now made it impossible to add anonymous works to your collection.

I'm probably going to either orphan or put my fic into the Anon collection before the author reveals. :(

Right now I'm wondering if I should just not reply to the recip's obligatory comment or log out to do it. If I reply logged in during the anon period, will my name become visible after the reveals even if the fic is orphaned or in the anon collection?

It’ll say Orphan Creator or Anonymous Creator depending on if you orphan or anon

I suggest putting it in the anon collection and then orphaning it— that way your recip can think you benevolently chose to remain a secret Santa rather than hiding your head in shame!
