IDK, but I've noticed at least two threads on FFA this week about people drifting away from fandom - actual threads about it, not just one person being melancholy in venting or whatever - and I wonder if it's part of the same general malaise. I know for me IRL stuff is getting me down and fandom isn't the escape it used to be, so maybe that's part of it? I don't know, just speculating.

Fandom’s omnipresence and the desperate hype machine of current media marketing makes me feel sometimes like fandom is something to escape FROM. Escaping to Yuletide at least means smaller fandoms that aren’t being pushed or memed to death.

For me it's a combination of my friends and I aging out of fandom and having more IRL shit to do, not being that interested in a lot of newer fandoms, and the pressure cooker of online fandom. Social media is stressful enough, when the way to do fandom is Twitter or Tumblr or Discord it's just not that fun for me anymore.

I don’t know if aging out of fandom is a thing necessarily that happens to everyone. I took a good break for when my kid was small, and I took breaks for buying houses and changing jobs, but to literally age out? Not going to happen to me, I like it too much to quit.

Fuck social media. I just like looking for fic sometimes fanart and keeping up with canon.

you can do fandom your own way keep what sparks joy, discard everything else, fandom konmari!!

and yeah that includes yt toss it if it's not working for you. but don't blame twitter/tumblr. they're shit but yt is on ao3. their shitty existence doesn't have to affect your personal fandom experience.

I guess the reason it's still fun for me is that I don't do Twitter, Tumblr or Discord.

DC

I do tumblr a lot, but I curate my experience. It's honestly not that hard!
