Remember hearing a coalie mention a fic they were writing that sounded up your alley, but haven't managed to find it in the collection? Ask here and people who know which one it is can give you hints for which tag/fandom etc you should be checking out.

Hello, so this is a very very rough draft right now. Some points:

- It's easy to check for unrevealed gifts, so this is limited to unrevealed collections right now. Might change that later, but that'll be slower.
- Performance is already kinda slow, probably will do more work on that near CB since that seems a decent size to test.
- Probably gonna noodle around with making the list sortable eventually.

If you have feature requests that would be useful for finding/writing treats, let me know and I can try to figure something out!

AO3 behaviours and gifts

As part the rejecting fics conversation (I personally am in the rejecting-for-bad-writing-that-isn’t-a-DNW-makes-you-an-entitled-asshole camp, to disclaim), people mentioned the weird “seeing a fic on your gifts page every week when you don’t like it” thing (including coalie with goldfish brain who reads each gift fic twice a week), and it made me wonder: do people genuinely click on their dashboard link with regularity? What do you do there? Is it a way to manage comments and replies? Or kind of akin to a vanity google, a reminder that you exist on AO3? Snark aside, I only ever click on this link to get to other stuff (ie to fulfil an assignment), so I’m wondering about these users who are on there all the time.

I wouldn't say I do it with regularity-- maybe once a month or so? because I have had trouble in the past where AO3 has not notified me about gift fic or related fic. I want to make sure that if someone is looking for my attention in those arenas, I give it to them.

I will also occasionally (once a year, maybe?) check my gift page to see if anyone has said anything nice about the fic, because I like to know I'm not the only person who knows about it if it's good. And hey, I once discovered a sequel/second chapter that was pretty worth looking at.

I've been finding commenting on my gifts increasingly stressful, and one of the great things about Yuletide for me is that even if I don't sign up, there will still be plenty of things for me to read. And I do comment on the things I love! It's just nice not to feel pressured by a commenting deadline or a host of recip comment expectations anymore.

I miss the days when there were recs all over the place in communities and on journals. Seems like you have to go 10 different places (recs tags on AO3, tumblr if you can even find them, FFA if a fic is sufficiently wanky to attract attention, discord channels) to see any excitement/talk about YT. Posting stories and treats feels more like shouting into the void than it used to, plus it seems like overall reading/commenting has dropped off. Even here it got quiet. Thoughts coalies?

Discord is very active for recs/discussion and there are rec posts on yuletide.

I think there is less anon discussion for sure. But memes have become really bitter/jealous so the positive, want to hype goodfic coalies don’t engage with fic recs/talk in those spaces anymore. The trolls won that battle.

I only managed to write one story this year -- a combination of RL crap and my assignment running away with me and becoming pretty long. But it also happens to be the type of fic that's very different from my usual output on my main account, so I decided to switch it over to my sock.

However, when reveals come, it'll look as if I wrote nothing. And I received several fantastic treats this year, which means I'm now paranoid that the kind people who wrote for me will look at my profile and feel... I don't know, cheated? Like they wasted their time writing for someone who didn't deserve it? I mean, I personally don't feel that way about people who have to default at all, so on some level I realize how silly this is, but alas.

So is this something you do, coalies? Do you check to see what your recips wrote? And if it seems like they contributed nothing, do you get mad and add them to some imaginary never-treat-again list? Tell me I'm being stupid, please!

I do look to see what people wrote, more out of curiosity and in case we share other fandoms. Not to condemn them for defaulting or whatever! Things happen!

I am not really a fan of people swapping stories over to other accounts but I wouldn't add someone to a never-treat list for doing so. That said I suppose I might look next year if I was considering treating two people, and be more tempted to treat someone who got no treats and wrote something than someone who got four treats and didn't write anything. That'd be a fairly unlikely situation though.

Tldr: prob not worth worrying about.

All of the above, to be honest! I want to find out who wrote one of my gifts so I can read everything they've ever written, and find out who wrote the other one so I can avoid them forever. Post-reveals recs or good egg comments are the dream of course, but unlikely. I'd love to make friends with coalies through the friending meme, too.

You've commented on a fic I wrote, but you haven't commented on your gift. And I think I know why: it is weird. Not bad, exactly. Technically competent writing, by which I mean "could've been beautiful and profound in another context, but a poor match for this canon," and the author's notes at the end hit multiple personal pet peeves. Based on the requests spreadsheet, it doesn't appear to be what you wanted. My fic wasn't what you wanted either, but you seemed to like it nonetheless.

I hope that either a) you liked your gift a lot better than I did and are simply taking your time working out the Gushing Comment It Deserves, or b) you didn't, but my fic helped salvage things.

I'm excited to find out who my author was (although I'm pretty sure I know already), but TBH, I'm also excited to start getting responses from people whose works I commented on.
