That’s really sad.

I am feeling like I’m missing something. What makes it sad in particular?

Because the was wanked about on coal for absolutely no reason. I assume they got wind of it an orphaned.

I don't think the fic itself was wanked about, everyone thought it was fine. The comment was slightly wanked about but even then most people said it was acceptable. Not worth orphaning over :(

Given the way I've seen a lot of people react to recipient comments (too late, too early, too short, too long, whatever) I would have assumed it was about the comment and not the wank, which barely even touched on the fic.

Re: Orphaning

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The recip didn't kudos it and left a somewhat terse comment.

Re: Orphaning

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone came here wight knighting the fic talking about how it was great and the recip is an asshole for leaving a perfectly fine comment. Coalies said the comment was fine and people shouldn’t get caught up over commenting history and need to take recips at their word. Even if they did dislike it, a fic being technically well written doesn’t mean it’s not someone’s idea of coal. They were polite and other people like the fic. Original exposer insisted they were just “giving examples” and not trying to drag the recip or commenting length.

It was needless wank. I hope that it was the author being mad and dragging it to coal because the thought of aurilly/lilith/some random person that didn’t even comment making wank for both the author and recip because ~I just don’t understand how you can dislike this flawless fic yet leave a nicer comment on a worse written one~ is so shitty. I know it happens though so I wouldn’t be shocked.

Who are aurilly and lilith? Do they have a history of making comment wank or something?

Re: Orphaning

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They’re the only other comments on the fic. They left long ones and seemed to really like it, which is what the original linker said. So it would need to be the author, one of the two people in the fandom, or a jerk who did all this but didn’t comment at all.

LOL @ “wight knighting”

Re: Orphaning

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s either or the author or someone who didn’t comment. Or someone who wanted to make wank about the commenters. Two people who have been going around collections, commenting the way they comment for years and years aren’t going to suddenly come and be wanky about this random fic, out of the hundreds they’ve commented on. It wouldn’t make any sense.

There's this Untitled Goose Game/Captain Marvel crossover:

Re: Orphaning

Judging from the short but gracious recip comment, it looks like this may have been an unrequested crossover for a canon the recip didn't know.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Forget unrequested crossover -- recip DNW'd crossovers. They were really gracious!

I mean, I guess technically, on some level, one could argue it's not a crossover because the goose game is also a thing that might exist in the real world. But on another, more fundamental level, this is obviously super shitty. And given that Captain Marvel and the goose game were both hot in exchanges this year, I have to wonder if this was someone hoping to strike it exchange popular or something.

And this was her only gift. Add dawnstone to the list of people who should get nice things next year.

Oh jeez, didn't even notice the recip had DNW'd crossovers. And yeah, this is one of those things that's the very definition of skirting a DNW. It's basically one long extended joke that's only really funny to people who are into the Goose Game, which is such a shitty gift to give to someone who didn't ask for another fandom to be mixed into their fic.

If dawnstone signs up for Chocolate Box, I might see about writing something for them.

CYRT

Yeah, I only noticed because I went to check to make sure she hadn't had one of those "I'm open to any sort of crossover!" clauses or something. And then discovered, nope, the opposite.

And yes, this is a perfect example of it being a real line-skirting. And it's like -- sure, if there were a throwaway line about Fury getting super obsessed with the Goose Game and being distracted during a meeting by it, it *wouldn't* be a crossover. But this is fully violating the spirit if not the letter of the DNW.

It's not "skirting" a DNW, it's landing directly on one.

And Morbane commented positively, of course.

The recip also commented positively, so I don't see how Morbane was supposed to magically divine it hit a DNW.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course she did. Only time Morbane cares about people writing DNWs is when it happens to herself.

Is there a way to see which fics in the collection are orphan or anonymous?

Filter for author=anonymous or whatever the code is in the filter box
