All the 'this year blows, all the fic sucks' comments I assume are from people who

1) only like gen
2) are only in about 10 fandoms maximum
3) don't like anything but extremely canon-compliant non-divergence/AU plots
4) fall on the 'I'll take anything as long as it is expertly written' side of that one debate

It's the only way I can see missing all the gems in Yuletide this year and why they didn't get a fic they liked either?

I just spotted a couple of mistakes in my fic, mostly objects where they shouldn't have been and my brain repeating phrases. All minor and quick fixes that slipped through my spag check, but I found them because they're in the copied quotes as part of a comment and I'm unexpectedly mortified

I use that title for people who do that regularly, but, yeah. Placeholder comments aren't comments on the content of the fic.

I'm going to say no because even though I wrote for a broadly popular canon, I wrote for a niche version which I think will be inaccessible to casual fans. I think I could have posted the exact same fic outside of Yuletide and still be met with the same response.

Unwrangled Fandoms?

So ... are they done wrangling new fandoms or what? Last year the mods couldn't be bothered to compile a list of them and just added a brief ETA on an existing post, and this year they apparently can't even be bothered to do that. I thought the comment Morbane made about how getting fic written for new fandoms was one of ~Yuletide's goals~ rang very false, and that goes double now.

I'm actually still waiting for one of mine to be wrangled. I was in the group of coalies who said that even waiting a couple of hours was too much and would mean people missed the fics, and three days...well. It genuinely makes me consider not writing for unwrangled fandoms again - which obviously stinks, and shouldn't be what YT inspires one to do.

I was surprised and tickled to get a really lovely comment the other day from someone who didn't know the fandom but had searched by tag/trope and found it that way.

Do you search by tags for tropes you like and read fandoms where you're completely unfamiliar with the characters?

Creativity Coal Poll

Reading through the collection made me wonder...

1. Did you prompt “creatively” in your letter? Niche/wacky AUs and divergences, “what if” prompts that request something in canon become fantastical (eg what if X were actually a vampire the whole time, what if Y/Z met because of a mail order bride service), an explication for why B acts the way they that is unexpected (eg B was actually a street hustler in their youth), etc.

2. Did you receive “creative” fic? Was it the creative idea you asked for or did you being open to creative fic make your author go ODAO but creatively?

3. If you are someone that comes up with creative prompts easily/likes them, are you open to writing them to any recip or do you treat that as opt-in and won’t give those interesting ideas unless the recip has creative leaning prompts? If you did write creative fic this year, was the prompt/general like creative?

1. Yes, my letter is mostly weird prompts. I have a few AUs but it is mostly my weirder takes on canon and strange divergence points.

2. Yes!

3. I do try to save it for people that are into it. I usually write canon compliant stuff over pure AUs, but there is so much fun to have within canon. This year two of the fics I wrote were creative and the recips loved them. One of the letters was more creative than the other, but I had a feeling the uncreative recip would be into my take on the straightforward prompt they gave.

None (didn’t sign up).

Four, and the hits:kudos ratio is pretty good on all of them. Three happy recip comments, one radio silence, several non-recip comments on most of them.

Two of the fandoms I wrote in have absolutely stellar, longer, later-dated fics getting really great reactions.

Instead of anxiously waiting if the weekend brings more comments on the fic I've written, I decided to tackle more fics and do some commenting myself. But I've gone through my fandoms already and read what appealed so I want to branch out a little and hear what others liked and perhaps even discover a new fandom that way.

So I spent the last few days in the hospital and not wanting my writer to feel like I didn’t read their fic I left a quick comment on my gift fic after reading it in the hospital but obviously not having enough energy to leave a full comment in hind sight it is Very short. Would it be weird or taboo to go back and edit my comment with more thoughts a few days later?
