For what it's worth, my fic is in a small fandom and it had great kudos/comments from fandom regulars for two days, but now it's only gathering hits.

Maybe people got to the stage where they're trying to read out of their usual fandoms, but finding out they can't without canon knowledge? So they move on. I have no other explanation.
