I don't understand people who haven't had time to comment on a gift yet but have found time to post a justification for not commenting yet on coaltide. Sort your priorities out.

I'm fucking cranky as fuck, in pain, and have zero brain abilities right now. I am in 100% the right state for coal. My gifter doesn't want me anywhere near the comment box, I promise.

I'm sorry, coalie. I hope the pain lets up soon

I already commented on my gift, but I get that it takes a different kind of brainspace to wank on an anon meme and compose a good comment on a fic. Posting on coal takes a few seconds, and I can do it on my phone while on the loo, or standing in a train, or procrastinating at work. Commenting on a fic, depending on how good and long the fic is, takes between 10 minutes and an hour, and I want my laptop for that.

Lol, you must write crappy comments, coalie.

cyrt

Please excuse me for taking 3 minutes to post on coaltide while my morning tea brews. I'll get back to working on my comment after breakfast and a shower; writing a good comment usually takes me 1-2 hours, so I hope to have it finished by lunchtime.

I have already commented on mine, but this is ridiculous. I'm a fairly fast writer and don't get particuarlly stressed about my phrasing/etc. on comments, and even so my comment on my shortest gift took at least half an hour -- re-reading the gift, thinking of several paragraphs worth of things to say and saying them, plus selecting quotes to comment on specifically and doing the commenting.

By contrast, commenting on coal takes a few minutes at most.

I always love when this complaint comes up, because clearly it takes the same amount of time and effort to post a quick comment here as it does to write up a thoughtful comment on a gift fic. Maybe they could go in with a thanks for writing this, I love it type comment real easy, but then coalies gripe about that, too.

Times I know I won't be able to leave a long, thoughtful comment within the first 48 hours, I leave a placeholder comment saying thank you and I loved it. That takes no more time than a comment on an anon meme and my writer doesn't get radio silence. I always go back to my placeholders and add a long second comment later, though. Some recips leave the placeholder and don't bother coming back, so I understand why some writers are leery of getting those.

I've had one person come back after leaving a placeholder comment, so I don't find them all that useful. I'm fine with short comments, but if the options are placeholder and potentially nothing else or several days, or even a week or two, with no comment and then a good comment, I'll take the second.

People don't always have time to comment in the first 48 hours, especially when exchanges open mid-week, around the holidays, or especially both. It's no skin off my nose to realize they might have life things going on and not get mad at them (or whatever emotion goes with calling them a piece of work). I know that doesn't work for everyone.

Seriously. I wasn't able to comment on my gifts until this morning, but my writer was already complaining on tumblr about it. Like...sorry I had to work and then go do family stuff and was too tired to read and comment when I finally had a moment to myself?

Complaining on Tumblr -- so they not only were complaining 48 hours in, but also de-anon'd themselves to do so?

Yeah and there was only one fic in the fandom for Yuletide so it was obviously theirs.

It's the difference between being the writer who thinks you'll only get a placeholder then nothing and being the recip leaving the placeholder who does come back with a second or even a third or fourth comment later should I fill up the comment box. (I do, even with the update.) In this case, we're talking about recips in this thread who wait until later to comment. Pro tip: if that's you, don't spend a lot of time in namespace on Discord saying the same thing. I've had recips I could see dicking around on Discord for days before finally commenting late in the anon period, and not one of those left a comment at the end which was worth waiting for. The best commenters seem to show up between 24 and 48 hours after reveals.
