Thanks for blowing my ratio, FFA. >:( I had a really nice 80 hits, 20 kudos when I went to work, I came home, I was linked there, and I got 40 new hits but only 6 new kudos.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Impossible to get those people to do anything but lurk, but they cry the most about no engagement!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who hasn't been there in ages...what's up with this giant hateboner for FFA?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's hilarious, because there are a ton of ffa people on coal.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the people that hate them the most don't go there and resent all the talk about it here, but there's definitely some self-hatred happening too.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's still 6 new kudos though, that's a good thing?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but now I have 100 more hits than I do kudos, which makes my fic look worse. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't that just make it clear that ratios are meaningless?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
It just felt really cool when I had an exceptionally good one. :(

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you could feel good about how many people are reading and rereading your fic, even if they're lurkers?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
In small fandoms, maybe.

My personal ratio metrics are 100% accurate for the what I will like in a fandom with 50+ fics when also accounting for tags. There have been times I clicked on fic outside my ratio just to see and nope, garbage :(

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We clearly like different things. I've never found numbers to be especially accurate regarding which fic I will enjoy. If anything, the stuff and the very top and the very bottom tends to be equally off-putting.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
.....Yes, that is how the ratio works? It doesn’t mean the Sherlock fic closest to 100% is the best, I’ll tell you that much if you don’t understand how people use ratios at all.

Things under a specific% and above a specific% suck and should be skipped. There is a ratio in the middle where good and great fic exist. Once you go above the great ratio zone, it is trashfic again.

100% accuracy sounds like pure confirmation bias, which means you're either an insufferable wanker or you're trolling.

Please do us all a favor and disable hits if you're going to be this whiny about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
It was one comment. Chill.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
And I posted one comment in response. Guess we're square.

DA

I really am thinking about disabling hits. This obsession with numbers is ridiculous.

NC

Do it. These metrics-obsessed coalies deserve to be thwarted.

I did that years ago and it feels great!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-29 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I did it a couple of months ago and recommend it.

YANC
I've installed one of those greasemonkey addons that whites out the entire stats bar on all fics, so I can't see hits, kudos, or comment numbers.

It's helping *a lot*.

This doesn't just happen with FFA recs. I have someone enthusiastically reccing something I did elsewhere, and it's driven the hits-kudos ratio way down while also resulting in zero new kudos. I get it, because it's a tiny fandom nobody knows - strongly suspect people are clicking in and then going "wait, I have no idea who these people are or what's going on."

So I'm focusing on how nice it is that someone liked it enough to rec it! Not every fic is going to have a pristine hits-kudos ratio. Some fics get rec'd instead, and that's OK.

I'm sorry but every time I See this kind of comment I just lol. It's so fucking stupid! ~Blowing my ratio~!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol m2, but I find a lot about how obsessive people on coal are about their stats very funny.
