Shit, I just left a thank you comment on a fic in Madness that's for a fandom only I requested, using one of my prompts, but I just noticed it's not actually gifted to me (there's no recipient). I don't usually pay much attention to my gifts page or email notifications, I just saw it on the fandoms list and assumed. Should I say something? Did I just commit a horribly embarrassing faux pas?

I get enough "thank you for writing this!" comments in the wild from people who aren't my recips that I wouldn't worry too much. They likely were worried it was getting close to a DNW or something.

The one thing I might do is re-read and see if it reads as passive-aggressive given the new context -- writing something for one of your prompts and not gifting it to you is something some people get weird about.

Also, double-check your Rejected Gifts tab just to be 100% sure you didn't accidentally reject the gift.

Unfinished fic

Given the wank over at FFA, is a lot of unfinished fic which is still being edited turning up for recips, or is this just one or two instances that have been wanked about?

My gift was unfinished at reveals but it's finished now. I assume that's probably true for everything that was getting edited post-reveals. If there's anything still unfinished at this point, I doubt that the writer is still working on it.

The recip's take: It features a character who, in canon, is a black man who spends his whole life as a servant with the threat of enslavement and/or imprisonment looming over him. At the end of the canon, he becomes a king of his own country and never has to serve anyone ever again.

Except, in this post-canon gift fic, surprise! The citizens of his new country force him to perform menial tasks for them as if he were their servant. This is played for comedy.

The opposing side: Oh, that was really cute. And definitely not at all how OP characterized it. The whole fic seemed to be about Stephen not wanting Childermass to be his servant (and thus very deliberately chore-blocking him), and the fairies were very clearly being positively influenced by Stephen and thrilled to help with the one chore he would actually let them do.

Yeah, OP's description of "force him to perform menial tasks for them" is totally inaccurate to the point of wankbaiting. The faeries aren't forcing him to do shit, they're just so inhuman that the only way home comforts like decent, flour-rather-than-bonemeal bread or clean dishes are going to show up is if a human provides them.

The whole point of the fic, in fact, is that Stephen is not allowing anyone else to perform said menial tasks, even when a fellow human shows up and volunteers to serve him.

ok coal I have a dilemma for you all to weigh in on! I wrote a very rushed treat and posted it right before the collection closed for reveals. I'm not super happy with it but there are parts I do like and the recip seemed pleased so I'm not planning on orphaning it or anything.

BUT. I realized how I can mostly fix the part I'm not thrilled with, and it involves expanding one scene in the middle. tbh I'm gonna do it before the anon period is over whether coal thinks it's kosher or not (I tweak little things after posting a lot, although not usually this much) but should I mention the change when I reply to the recipient's comment? it really is just adding one conversation, I'm not adding a chapter or changing the ending or anything drastic. thoughts?

One typo does not worse prose make. You should still comment positively about the prose! But don't mention the typo. They'll probably see it and fix it eventually.

How is there a Teen Titans fic when there's >1400 fics after filters? If the recip was requesting a specific writer, shouldn't it be tagged as that run, rather than the general tag?

It's the writer's choice how to tag. I also tagged a larger umbrella fandom for my fic to get more eyes on it.

NYRs

I defaulted late and am going to have to write an NYR for next year. Am I remembering right that NYRs for readmission (as opposed to random Untherius junk) can be for any Yuletide request as long as the fandom is still eligible, or does it have to be from the most recent year?

It can be from any year as long as the fandom is still eligible when you write it! I had to write one this year and used a prompt from 2016.
