If you were Supreme Ruler of Yuletide, what rule would you want to make to fix a current problem, even if it has wanky side effects?

Proven spitefic = insta-ban.

Participation involves an admission process, including past exchange experience and writing samples.

1. Completed fics have to be uploaded by deadline and cannot be edited after. (Like on the old Yuletide website.)

2. All fics have to be exactly 1000 words long.

Make requests visible during sign-ups.

I don't know what percentage of Yuletide-goers are exchange regulars that know how to game sign-ups, but I feel like there would be less wank and hand-wringing if the regular crowd could avoid the sign-ups they disliked.

I'm skeptical that this would cause any net improvement. Given how many last-minute signups/changes there are, you'd have to keep checking up until the end to be sure you're not matchable to anyone you don't want to be matched to, but this would only incentivize *more* last-minute signups/changes.... It might just produce more angst overall when people try and fail to game their signup.

There are fandoms I might offer if I could see the requests.

Change the ban on certain kinds of RPF to 'If you request the following and linger as a pinch hit for X amount of time, mods may ask you to add fandoms'.

Also make it include all modern day politicians, and all 'people found guilty of murder*'

*Also includes crimes against humanity

If your recip hasn't commented by the time the next year's Yuletide collection opens, you can take their name off the gift, with the option of gifting the fic to whoever left you the comment you liked best. I'm sure that won't cause any wank...

Placeholder fic, unfinished fic, forgot to include all characters type mistakes = 1 year ban.

DNW violations, wanky spitefic = 3 year ban.

Multiple violations = Permaban.

I'd be all for banning people who write DNWs and other fic that breaks the rules. Or making them write NYRs before they can sign up again.

It actually shocks me that this is not already a rule.

I really don't understand what banning someone from Yuletide proves. It's certainly easy enough to sock up and carry on. For that matter, if they've caused sufficient wank, many participants would probably sock up anyhow, regardless of whether they were banned.

No treats, everything in the main collection is assigned. No letters allowed, and prompts are unrevealed and secret until 1 week before the deadline, when the Madness collection opens.

Make the main collection assigned fics only. Treats go into the Madness collection regardless of length.

Require all fics to be fully complete and edited by the deadline, not just bus-pass complete.

Visible requests, all treats go into Madness, fandoms get wrangled before reveals.

Everyone is required to respond to the gift, either by commenting, flagging the mods about a violation, or rejecting. Failure to comply results in a one year ban. Writing DNWs results in a permaban.

I heartily agree with your second paragraph.

I also would require that all signups include DNWs (or a statement "I have no DNWs") in the signup, not the letter.

Stop the insane DNW lists that are like "DNW vore, incest, rape, genocide, woundfucking" when canon isn't anywhere near that. It should be common sense that some kinks are opt in, not opt out.

Impossible to enforce, I know.

... Why are you banning the DNWs and not the nuts who will write those things for anyone who doesn’t prohibit it?
