I really don't understand what banning someone from Yuletide proves. It's certainly easy enough to sock up and carry on. For that matter, if they've caused sufficient wank, many participants would probably sock up anyhow, regardless of whether they were banned.

Maybe. But it feels to me like the major repeat wankers at least are pretty attached to their mains, or we wouldn't still be seeing Untherius causing drama even now.

A lot of exchange participants are inordinately attached to their mains. I still say a temporary ban and/or NYR requirement for people writing DNWs would be a positive step.

Forcing someone else to potentially get a DNW fic doesn’t seem fairs.

They should have to write OW or get into one of the mods’ fandoms and work off a letter with DNWs and prompts. The mods then have the full context needed to judge if the fic is still spiteful/DNW/whatever.

Why make random people be their guinea pig/forced to say thanks for (or reject) a gift from a wanker?

cyrt

You might be surprised to know who actually gives DNWs in exchanges. A lot of them are from people with carefully crafted reputations who get careless.

My theory is that this why you so often see recips of DNWs being dragged on FFA and coal even when mods ruled in their favor - "good egg" writers going on the attack.

Yes, this happened to me, and it was entirely do to carelessness.

Fortunately, it wasn't a stated DNW, though it was something they said they were not enthusiastic about. It happened because I'd written for them twice before, I wasn't paying close attention, and it was something I thought was harmless and vanilla. Even more fortunately, I gifted them something else, that they loved, that I had been working on but wasn't sure I would finish in time, in madness.

I've been doing exchanges for 15 years or so, and that year I was careless. It worked out fine, but that was sheer luck on my part. I would still be writing treats and NYRs to make up for it (out of guilt, not because I think the mods would have cared) if it had been even a whisker more serious or I hadn't been halfway through the treat and so gotten at least one thing right.

gifting isn't necessary for nyr, just adding to the collection

I agree. The beatrice_otters and watson sisters of the exchange world are absolutely committed to their names, which they've had for 15+ years now, and would take a ban very seriously, regardless of how tone deaf they are about everything else.

I imagine the reason there aren't more rules like this is that they create more work for the mods without actually curbing the problems.
