Wasn’t it a tiny screencap, which of course is very easy to fake on a plain text site like Ao3 anyway? It just seems to add needless work to their modding life by this being something they have to actively mod against. If someone was trying to doxx heeroluva’s real name/location then yes, please put in the work. But defending a pretty much baseless claim for a fandom pseud that seeks to have been retired is crazy.

No, I don’t see how the means has that big of an impact on the ends when the ends are the same when the motives of those means (to expose someone for a perceived bad behavior on behalf of the researcher and against the will of the bad faith actor who undoubtedly doesn’t want to be exposed) are the same too. If isn’t a case of A accidentally putting a peanut in soup and B doing it on purpose, with C who ate both bowls dying because they’re allergic. The heeroluva anon sought out information and shared it to damage his rep. This Watson anon sought out information and is sharing it to ruin her rep. They used different tactics but the intent and outcome is literally the same.

"This Watson anon sought out information and is sharing it to ruin her rep."

Eh, not really. I was mostly looking to find better support for my statement that I thought one person had written both fics for the recip who got shafted. The Watson info was something I stumbled across in the process.

sc And also, fawatson doesn't need me to ruin her name -- her past actions have accomplished more than enough on that front already.

I'm not sure I'd have shared the author's ID directly on coal if it hadn't been someone with a long, long track record of similar bullshit in exchanges. If the ID the search pulled up had been a NNF, I'd have shared the method, but not the name.

See also: does anyone think that differently of Untherius after his NYR DNW-a-palooza this round? I guess a few people are no longer saying "he wrote a coffeeshop AU, maybe he's changed!" but it's not like this year's NYR gave us new information.

Well, that's surely a take.

If you commit a crime, you can be convicted on circumstancial evidence. If the police illegally finds evidence without a search warrant, you'll go free. You committed the same crime, but different tactics to catch you will make all the difference in the end.

You sound like one of those people who say we can't "cancel" accessed rapists because they haven't had their fair trial in court yet.

Fandom isn't entitled to due process coalie, holy shit. Just because heeroluva was exposed via an exploit doesn't mean we have to throw out the knowledge and treat him the same like the actualfax law. He hasn't been sent to jail.

His life isn't even ruined! I bet he's got a new account and signed up to Yuletide with no drama. Shit, based on how upset you are on what happened to him like he's Brock Turner or something, you could be him lurking coal!

A dedicated handful of FFA wankers are infinitely more upset about rule-breaking than they are about racism or its affect on people.

AYRT

Wtf? I'm not at all upset what happened to him. I was arguing with AIRT that I understood mods putting a lid on nonnies outing authors via an AO3 exploit and that it wasn't the same as saying "this person has the same style as fawatson, it's probably them".

Comparing this situation to how we feel about accused rapists is tasteless as fuck.

Ugh, this.
