Shit, I just left a thank you comment on a fic in Madness that's for a fandom only I requested, using one of my prompts, but I just noticed it's not actually gifted to me (there's no recipient). I don't usually pay much attention to my gifts page or email notifications, I just saw it on the fandoms list and assumed. Should I say something? Did I just commit a horribly embarrassing faux pas?

I get enough "thank you for writing this!" comments in the wild from people who aren't my recips that I wouldn't worry too much. They likely were worried it was getting close to a DNW or something.

The one thing I might do is re-read and see if it reads as passive-aggressive given the new context -- writing something for one of your prompts and not gifting it to you is something some people get weird about.

Also, double-check your Rejected Gifts tab just to be 100% sure you didn't accidentally reject the gift.

SC A re-read of your comment, I mean. A comment like "Thank you so much for writing this for me! I love seeing authors use my prompts to write gifts just for me. :)" is going to read fine on something gifted to you, but really pass-agg on something not gifted to you and written using your prompt.

Meh, you were the only one to request it. They may not have gifted it to you because it hit some DNW of yours or deviated from your prompt in a way they might have assumed you would dislike.

Possible they just accidentally left your name off, given that for treats one has to fill it in manually.

This. I've checked my recip field six times since I posted because it happened once and it took me days to realise.

Can confirm, I did this with one of my treats and didn’t notice until the next morning /o\

Yup, I did this this year and didn't notice until just before the collection opened.

Is this for a horror video game? I noticed that there was a madness gift with no recipient that matched one of the prompts of someone whose letter I bookmarked.

Yeah, that's the one. I'm hoping it was just a mistake because the fic was amazing, but if not, I hope they won't mind getting my comment anyway! I definitely wouldn't want anyone thinking I'd refused it.

Maybe they gifted it to someone with a similar name as yours by a typo, and that person refused it because they don't know the fandom and knew it had to be a mistake?

No, not an embarrassing faux pas, but maybe a little confusing depending on the wording. I'd just edit the comment a tiny bit to remove any reference that the story's for you. (But I thank authors of stories I love in exchanges for writing them all the time, especially if it could have been written for me and/or was really fantastic.)

It's probably for you, at any rate, and they forgot your name. Seems wild, but it happens.

I had to restrain myself from saying similar to one writer. The fic was EXACTLY tailored to my request. But it was gifted to someone else. (Turns out we requested the same thing! And it's far better than the actual gift I got so I hope my author doesn't see my glowing comment over there.)
