Idk, I usually treat with stories I think would be fun to write, regardless of who the recip is. YMMV, obviously.

Why write for a challenge then? Just post mid-year if you don’t need an audience

Because people give prompts I might not have thought of otherwise, mostly. I treat challenges exactly like what they are - events that *challenge* me to write something fun/difficult to pull off/interesting/(...). I never said I don't like having an audience. It's just that I don't review people's feedback credentials in order to determine whether I want to write for their prompt.

The rest of the people reading the collection is also part of the audience, though, and some of my fandoms get way more eyeballs at Yuletide than they would any other time of the year.

It doesn't even have to be that, tbh, there's no reason for me to check commenting history because a good commenter cannot make me more inspired for a treat, it's prompt-based only.

It's not about the adulation. I'm pretty sure I could write for most of the current Known Non-Commenters and still get comments, because I almost always get non-recip comments. Hell, a few of the best-known non-commenters like FF_D might even mean more comments, since people often make a mental note to check out and comment on their gifts.

So for me, at least, it's not about the comments. It's about not rewarding shitty behavior. Not thanking your author with at least the bare minimum, or thanking some of your authors but not others, is shitty behavior that has a very good chance of making your assigned authors, who have to write for you, feel crappy. Any sensible person doing exchanges should know this. So no, I'm not rewarding people who do that with extra treats.

Is it really that hard to understand that others might not be interested in writing a gift for someone who doesn't bother to acknowledge it?

I mean, I'm like you with treats. When I get inspired, I write it, and I don't bother to check their commenting history unless there are several people with the same request and similar prompts and I can take my pick whom to gift the treat to. I once wrote a fic for my own prompt (not in Yuletide), so yeah, recip comments are secondary to me.

But that doesn't mean that I fail to understand why other people might feel differently.

But there are lots of stories I want to write in lots of fandoms, I gotta narrow it down somehow, so why not also take into account what kind of response I'm likely to get from a recipient?
