How long do you wait to accept your recip is a no-show?

Never? January? When they reject it?

End of anon period.

Honestly it's day 2 and my defeatist ass has already given up

I've had them pop up three weeks after reveal, so I don't know. But it's far too early to assume that right now.

Depends on their commenting history, really. If they're a reliable commenter, I assume something came up IRL, especially around the holidays and will probably wait a month before just assuming they'll reject later. If they're a known no-show or a sock with no history, I'll figure I'm getting nothing before the fic's even revealed.

I've had one comment months after the exchange that they had forgotten about due to a major RL disaster. So you never know when the recip might show up!

Honestly? I stop caring what my recip thinks after 3 days, and if I don't hear from them during the anon period, I assume I'll never heard from them ever.

I've had a few recips turn up to comment 3 months, 4 months later, but I've also written literally hundreds of exchange gifts; the chance of this happening is small.

Honestly? The next exchange I do, when I get a recip comment. I had a no-show recip last year and it bummed me out a lot, but I got over it the next time I wrote a fic for someone and they liked it.

I will still side-eye this person and game against getting them if they ever do another exchange I do, but last year's Yuletide seems to have been their last. (They are still active on Tumblr so I know they didn't, like, drop dead last December.)

One week or the end of anon period, whichever is longer.

I know I usually take a few days to comment, especially if I have multiple gifts. I'm not going to hold recips to stricter standards than I allow myself.

If they haven't shown up by the end of anon period, my expectations for getting any kind of acknowledgement are basically zero. Of course, sometimes they do pop up out of nowhere weeks or months after the fact; last year I didn't hear a peep from my recip, but months later they suddenly appeared and left kudos and a very nice comment on the fic. Made for a pleasant surprise!

Give em at least till the weekend! Believe it or not there's people it's not a high enough priority for to rip time away from holiday+family+workweek, but that doesn't mean they'll love it less when they get there.

As an aside, how long do you wait for a gift in a small exchange? I got a "sweet, thanks!" on the story I wrote the other day, which is typical for that recip so I'm not paranoid about the fic, and no gift for me has materialized. I'm not inclined to even inform the mod, who must already know. If nothing shows up, *shrugs*, eh.

I won't do this particular exchange again, though, for both those reasons.

If a collection has already revealed and I had no gift, I'd chalk that one up to a lesson learned on why tumblr exchanges are a bad idea.

I wouldn't do an exchange that didn't guarantee a gift for someone who completed their assignment to requirements. Not happening, period, end of story.

If I were participating in an exchange and for some reason I did not receive a gift despite completing my assignment to requirements, I would go to the mods immediately upon reveals, if not earlier. If the mods didn't immediately put me out to EPH, I'd be naming and shaming that exchange and the mod(s) everywhere.

I suppose what I'm saying is: name and shame, coalie. Name and shame.

I’m currently scrambling to try to finish a fic for an exchange I tried to default in but there didn’t seem to be a pinch hit and the collection is revealed, so now I feel bad my recip didn’t get any exist and am going to make it happen? Never again on a tumblr exchange. I needed that default, it was a emergency type situation.

Basically, yeah. +1 on bad modding.

I'd be a lot more optimistic at this point if they hadn't had a blank signup, talked on their Tumblr about probably defaulting, and been visibly active online plenty since reveals. A placeholder and a wait for them to get around to it would be fine, I'm just not convinced they even know they've got a gift at all.
