...How long does it take a placeholder commenter to return? Been waiting three days for one of mine to return and I'm curious as to whether this is short/long/average/I should now expect them to disappear off the face of the earth.

One time it took two days. The other time, they hadn't reappeared by author reveals, so I replied to their placeholder and was like, "I'm so glad you liked the fic! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it," and then they came back in a day or so.

Skirting DNWs

I've noticed a few people who've complained about fics that skirted close to their DNWs but didn't quite hit them in a way that would justify going to the mods.

In your experience, coalies, how common is this?

Depends on the fandom/writer and how the DNW was worded. And I don’t mean “I wouldn’t like x” vs “DNW: X” (people that don’t get that are idiots) but saying “I want happy endings” instead of saying “I don’t like prolonged angst” and then thinking a mostly unhappy fic with a HEA ending is skirting your DNWs.

I got a fic that was the opposite end of the [trope] dynamic that I enjoy to the point where it felt like a DNW. I don’t think the author was skirting my DNWs even though all my other likes (when put next to that trope) would show you clearly what I would be looking for when it came to that ship, but some people are bad at context clues or are so into what they like that they are blind that it isn’t what you like.

IME, that is the most common form of DNW skimming. The “I’m not touching you” circling your listed DNWs is intentional even from casual readers POV and is thankfully more rare.

Brought to you by the Tahani/Eleanor space AU for The Good Place, which is tagged Alternate Universe - Space and Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, but not with what it specifically is, which is a Fifth Element fusion. I suspect people aren't clicking because they figure it's a fusion for a canon they don't know (I was figuring Charlie Stross's Accelerando, based on the title) -- or they are clicking and then backclicking when they realize it's for Fifth Element.

Also, expanding the tentacle porn (ok, tendril porn) elements enough to make it M-rated and then advertising said elements in the tags might have helped.

Plenty of people seem to be kudosing fics, but there seem to be fewer comments all around.

I wonder if ppl are still burned out over the holidays... I can see why, as I personally haven't had time to read anything but my own gifts yet (got loads bookmarked for the weekend though!)

For me, it was the exact opposite. I think it depends a lot on the fandom. But yeah, overall people read less than they do outside of the holiday season. It's obvious if you look at the overall stats (hits, comments and kudos) in fandoms that exist outside of Yuletide as well.

Not a plan, but an ambition: I'm so jealous of the people who write those perfectly in-character plotty fics in the 10-15k range, and someday I would like to manage to write one. ;_;
