Maybe your gift sucks, maybe it’s fine...but someone else in the collection got the gift you REALLY wanted, and you’re kicking their name off to slap on your own.

Vague about the fic you wish was your gift or hype it explicitly with a link.

It doesn't really count, but someone else got a really great fic with kinks I adore... for a fandom I've never encountered before. /o\ Would have loved to get that with my characters.

I don't know if this is genuine or sarcastic but if genuine then thanks, I felt the same way lol. It would have been sooo easy to get a really mild version of some of those things in there somewhere. But no.

My fandom got a handful of fics, all of them good. One of them is the best and I’m sad it wasn’t gifted to me :(

No, the recip had an (objectively) better letter than mine and leaves far better comments than me so even if I had managed to come up with it, they would be within their rights to gift it to them. I still would have liked it if the author ODAO to give it to me though, but it would never happen.

The exact fic I wanted, and prompted, was written for someone else.

(I checked. We had similar prompts.) I'm so jealous because the fic I got sucked. But at least I got to enjoy theirs.

That's great, it's a million times better than the exact fic you wanted not being written, which is the situation most people are in! It doesn't matter what name is on it.
