...How long does it take a placeholder commenter to return? Been waiting three days for one of mine to return and I'm curious as to whether this is short/long/average/I should now expect them to disappear off the face of the earth.

One time it took two days. The other time, they hadn't reappeared by author reveals, so I replied to their placeholder and was like, "I'm so glad you liked the fic! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it," and then they came back in a day or so.

The one previous time I received a placeholder comment, they came back maybe 4-5 days later.

This is the second time I've received a placeholder. They haven't come back yet, but history says they'll comment, so I'm not worried about it.

I've had people return to supplement placeholders within a day. I also had somebody come back once after a year and a half. So, yeah, you're definitely still within a reasonable wait time.

IME, generally speaking, people who are going to remember to come back on their own (and have not been eaten by Life Events that would have made it impossible anyway) do it before author reveals. I always wait until author reveals to reply to comments on exchange fics anyway, so if someone hasn't come back by then, replying to their placeholder can serve as a gentle reminder. But past that point, I wouldn't keep your hopes up - let it be a pleasant surprise if they DO show, rather than nursing increasing resentment if they still don't.

I once left a not-quite-placeholder while I was in the hospital in labor (I made it at least a couple of lines, knowing I might not be able to come back immediately) and the kid was well over two before I came back to comment properly. But I did it!

There's at least one person on FFA this year who literally got a call about a death in the family after leaving a placeholder. I mean, shit happens.

Have had two people never come back (on fics on which non-recips commented with generosity, so I don’t think it’s that they sucked).
