Ship and Trope recs

(Anonymous) 2019-12-28 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Instead of anxiously waiting if the weekend brings more comments on the fic I've written, I decided to tackle more fics and do some commenting myself. But I've gone through my fandoms already and read what appealed so I want to branch out a little and hear what others liked and perhaps even discover a new fandom that way.

Ask for recs here if you are in the same boat. (My own inquiry follows below to avoid screwing up the threading.)

What fics did you love this YT that

- have a m/m pairing (canonical or non-canonical)
- end on a somewhat hopeful or happy note

Extra bonus if the fic is in historical fandoms, action/crime/adventure fandoms, or sci-fi/fantasy fandoms.

Any medium is fine. Any rating is fine.

Guardian TV, M/M/M (including twins). SFF fandom, time loop, time tampering - the villain tries to rewrite the world and ends up inserting himself into his brother/his brother's boyfriend's relationship.

Far from comprehensive, since I've only just started going through some of my fandoms, but so far I've enjoyed:

A Solitary Death
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21826942
Bone Key, Booth/Ratcliffe, 7.6k. Casefic, very much in keeping with the tone of canon ... except for the part where it ends on an upbeat note with m/m potential strongly leaned into. (Historical + sff.)

Dépaysement
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21574309
Banlieue 13, Damien/Leïto, 4.9k. Lovely post-canon get-together fic, which leans on revisiting some canonical crossdressing for one character - big plus for me, may or may not be one for you! (Action/crime/adventure.)

Your Answers, Please
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21784564
Die Hard, John/Matt, 13k. Die Hard almost always gets something good at Yuletide, IME, and there are some shorter John/Matt fics this year too; but this one was my favorite! I'll never ever get tired of post-canon moving in together, recovery, and bedsharing. *______* (Action/crime/adventure.)

your smile's a frown turned upside down
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21720640
Great Wall, William/Tovar, 1.6k. You honestly probably don't even need to know canon to enjoy this, lightweight and delightful and bantery - but if you happen to like the idea of monsters from space attacking ancient China, and Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal helping to stop them, Great Wall may be your jam. Just FYI. (Historical + action/adventure + sff! TRIFECTA.)

lay me down and close my eyes
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21920392
Jeremiah (TV), Jeremiah/Markus, 3.4k. Tropey "casual" sex-as-stress-relief with hints of deeper feelings in the background, and some excellently in-character dialogue, too. (Sff + action/adventure-ish, depending on the episode.)

A Favour for a Friend
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21409522
The Mummy series, Ardeth/Jonathan, 4.6k. There's another Ardeth/Jonathan fic that's solid, but I found this one a bit more fun. :D Delightful Jonathan POV, A++ Mummy shenanigans, and Ardeth to the rescue. (Historical + action/adventure + sff! TRIFECTA AGAIN.)

And I haven't gotten to them yet, but there's m/m I expect to end happily in Shazam! (action/adventure + sff, at least if you count superheroes as sff) and Yank at Oxford (historical, at least sort of, since the movie's from 1938).

There is quality m/m with happy endings or a promise of thereof in The Bone Key, Doom Patrol, Prax/Amos in The Expanse, Ethan/Victor in Penny Dreadful, The Sting, Y Tu Mamá También.

I'm still reading tonight and I might be back with more :)

The Binding by Bridget Collins is a fantasy setting with roughly 19th-century technology levels and a canon m/m ship - all three fics written for it are about the pairing, though if you're looking to pick up the canon, be aware that the first part of the book is a mystery that's thoroughly spoiled by all of these fics, two out of three of which are post-canon.

M/F or gen in fandoms that are considered "classics." Mostly thinking of books but am open to movies or tv shows that have been around long enough to have achieved "classic" status to a degree.

For two very different shades of dysfunction, I liked "A Paler Shade Of White" over in Madness, a Withnail & I fic where Withnail and Marwood reunite:

https://archiveofourown.org/works/21962749

And I liked "Out Of Bounds", an Another Country fic where Bennett plays with fire and gets some horny Fowler consequences. Gets kickass mileage out of canonical caning.

ALL the stories for The Lighthouse, both main collection and madness. Oh man, they're all really good, and the Ephraim/Thomas relationship is full of what the fuckery, just like in the movie. Good, good stuff.

This Ritual fic takes a canon dysfunctional relationship between a group of friends and give a an even more fucked up backstory for the ship at its core https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21813619

This Penny Dreadful fic gives a do-over for a canon m/m one night stand. Dorian Grey is jaded and only wants to fuck freaks, so it’s good his friend is a werewolf https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21625108

I've already heard good things about the ones for A Yank at Oxford, The Terror, and Bon Appetit Test Kitchen RPF.

Re: Ship and Trope recs - horror/creepy

(Anonymous) 2019-12-30 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What fics have you liked with a horror or creepy vibe, coal? Here are a few I liked:
The Rotten Heart - Behind You (webcomic). Casefic with a creepy spirit in a decaying town.
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21640975

A Solitary Death - The Bone Key (Sarah Monette). Casefic with an ancient Greek vampire-thing.
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21826942

Blood, Cubed - The Perfection. IDK if this counts, exactly, but it's fucked-up post-canon fluff for a horror movie.
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21930331

I've kind of skimmed the horror tag, but I would love specific recs for stuff in it, or for other creepy fic that didn't get tagged that way.
