You (and they) should know that coals de-facto advice for gifts you dislike is “mention whatever few things you do like, say thank you AND DO NOT FAKE EFFUSIVE PRAISE”.

People like long comments, yes. People want their work to land, yes. I don’t see why you think anycoalie expects a long comment on a fic that didn’t land. The recip isn’t even a long commenter on their fav fics so I don’t get what else you would expect any short commenters lukewarm comments to look like.

/good egg long commenter who genuinely sees nothing wrong with their actions. As an author it would make me feel bad but I’d rather know than treat them again if my best effort fic isn’t their cuppa.

I didn't say they should have left a longer comment. I said their comment was perfectly acceptable but that obviously some people would prefer longer ones so they shouldn't be surprised if people say so. If they didn't like the fic, I think they did the right thing.

NA

The coalie that brought up a longer comment as ““gracious”” personally rose my eyebrows. Longer comments being more gracious is a take I hadn’t seen before. Long comments are usually framed in the positive and not you-may-as-well-treat-aurilly-since-she’ll-give-you-a-full-commentbox-worth-of-gracious-spin-even-if-its-DNW-coalfic.

Anyway this looks like this is veering towards long v. short comments wank which I don’t care for so I’ll butt back out now.

that coalie - I was talking about an entirely different comment on a different (and, imo, unreadable) fic in a different canon. It was still short! But it came across as a kind response to a fic that was well-meant but really bad. Hence, gracious.

Seriously, this is coal: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2019/works/21810610
