...Did Yoon Ha Lee get assigned to write fic for his own book? WTF?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got another work for Yuletide 2019 for Gideon the 9th -- the recip has one other Yuletide fic, but it's tagged Yuletide Treat. The Gideon the 9th may have been his assignment.

He's got one other work for his own canon that's not tagged Yuletide Treat, but maybe he just forgot the tag.

+1 Yeah, I'm guessing this is a prolific-treating situation.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
NGL, I'd like to write and receive fic for my own book.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd just feel incredibly uncomfortable. Don't cross the streams.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be delighted if the author of the rare book series I've been requesting for years decided to reward my enthusiasm with a fic, too.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love it if they wrote a treat. But a pro writer getting assigned their own canon for the biggest fic exchange makes me very uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think even a treat is nagl. How is that fair to any other author that wrote the fandom. Alternatively, what if the author’s fic flops and someone else’s story is more popular?

Authors should only participate under a sock in their own fandom imo.

Interestingly, by kudos, the top two in the fandom actually aren't by him.

I don't like it either. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I come to fandom to see fans' takes on the canon, not the author's.

It's very WTF. I can't think of anything more narcissistic.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol nah you’re just salty

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No.... I can think of way worse. Writing a story on an exchange for a fan doesn't even come close to the worst a narcissist gets, if this author even is one.

I went to FFA once a few years ago and there he was, signing his comments and everything. I thought it was really weird, but nonnies didn't seen to think it was strange.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow, despite not signing your comments, you're as recognizable as he is.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who you're accusing me of being ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Is there an ongoing wank?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
FFA has that rule where people can drop in if they're being talked about, but yeah, [personal profile] yhlee was just signing his comments. It was very weird.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
ha, i guess if you are talking about yourself that's good enough?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-01 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Him writing in his own fandom is not good, but at least he didn't give his terrible art!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have a new DNW.

(I mean, I'm not in any fandoms where this is an issue, but if I ever get into one, yeah. Definitely will be DNWing the creator engaging with me under the cover of an anonymous exchange.)

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's not going to be an enforceable DNW - it'd effectively be DNWing fic for the fandom you matched on. In some exchanges you can ask the mods not to match you with specific people.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, yeah, I would 100% be contacting the mods and asking them not to match me to the creator if they were offering the fandom. But that DNW is going in my ODs and my letter, and if the creator is a decent person they won't ignore it.

And this is all theoretical but presumably if I'm into the fandom I'm probably a fan of the creator and think they and their work is pretty great! I'm just made hugely uncomfortable at the thought of them writing for me in a fic exchange where I expect to be engaging with fellow fans. Like, UR great Creator but DNW you in my yuletide experience kthx.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
......I don't think you understand how astronomically wanky it is to demand that someone default if they match to you.

DC Asking the mods not to match you doesn't really help you avoid treats, though.

IDK. My solution is just not to ask for fandoms where the creators do this.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if the mods couldn't guarantee they would not be my assigned writer I would just not request the fandom. Idk, in general this kind of thing would put me off a fandom entirely, I imagine. But I dont' really know since it hasn't ever been an issue for me. It just strikes me as so massively awkward, ugh...
