I don't at all see how that makes someone an asshole. That's literally the point of exchanges. As long as you put as much work in your assignment to make your recip happy, it doesn't matter if you're being a "difficult participant" by the way of requesting rare things. This attitude is really foreign and kind of terrible to me.

Exchanges are exchanges. Someone writes a fic, they get a fic. As long as a fandom/pairing/trope is within the scope of the exchange, it’s not doing anything wrong.

Hate aquatics all you like but being against people who are PHs (regular or otherwise) means that you don’t understand the purpose of exchanges. If you want something where fics go up regardless and everyone who writes isn’t guaranteed a gift, exchanges aren’t for you.

I don't know what about "exchanges are not commissions" was unclear to you. Exchanges are not for purchasing fics to your specifications, whether you're paying in money or in writing. They are a fun activity for fans to do together. If no one wants to write your Third Reich fetish, you cannot use the exchange system to force people to.

You aren’t entitled to a fic with your optional details, no. You cannot demand one specific plot be written. You *are* entitled to a fic in your fandoms with your characters. It is the whole point of exchanges. That is hardly a gun to anyone’s head. Nobody is forced to offer any fandom. It is not a commission or being unreasonable to sign up for a fic in Fandom X when the mods literally approved Fandom X.

If a fandom being too rare bothers you then more power to you. Do exchanges like Not Prime Time and make exchanges with some level of popularity requirement. Maybe Flash Exchanges where people can pick whatever fandom they want to write for you is more your speed, I don’t know, but things like Yuletide, CB, ToT, MM Rares, FemslashEx, GenEx, Nonconathon, and most other exchanges are not for you if you think asking for 3-10 fandoms and wanting fic in one of those fandoms is a sin.

You didn't even get it. It's not that aquatics requests "rare things." They're requesting a potentially really offensive niche kink and trying to force people into writing it by lingering as PH and also doing bait and switch recs.

The rarity is only an issue in that it means they pull nasty shit to try to get what they want because they can't get it any other way. If we're using rape as the equivalent, it'd be like someone signing up requesting only noncon to every freeform exchange where that was possible, except in this hypothetical scenario, no one else kinks on noncon.
