Eh, I don't think people would have a problem if there actually was nuance. The whole "invent a fake gay brother for a real Nazi general" angle makes it seem like the author is aggressively trying to absolve the characters of any responsibility for the actions of the regime they're literally fighting for while still tapping in to that cool Nazi cachet, and it doesn't help that people do that with actual RL Rommel too. News flash: not being an antisemite ~in your heart~ doesn't count for shit when you supported the antisemites seizing power in your own country and then helped them take over Europe so they could gas everyone. Goebbels wasn't an antisemite either before he hopped aboard the Hitler train.

And the fact people are tagging fic with "pure Germanic male relations" doesn't do wonders to convince me of their good intentions.

I can't comment on your newsflashes, but the tag is pretty obviously a joke about the no-homo fanfic a character writes in the story.

That may well be true, but it's sending a pretty ambiguous signal to anyone casually glancing over the tags... which is going to be most onlookers, because most people are not into reading Desert Peach fic.

There are some things that are better kept as fandom in-jokes and not broadcast to the wider community, even at the cost of not reccing your Yuletide gift on anonmemes.

Is tagging a fic really broadcasting? I usually tag based on the assumption people who are interested in my fic are familiar with the canon.

I for one am blaming Aquatics*.

The writer did a perfectly honorable thing, writing a fic for a recip in a nice fandom which the recip obviously enjoyed and tagging it (in context) appropriately. Aquatics then decided to rec it in a disingenuous way guaranteed to piss people off and to expose the fic and its tagging to hostile scrutiny.

I don't care what fandoms they like, but I do care about them being a dick, and that was a dick move.

* Or the anti-Aquatics troll, but frankly I don't think they're creative enough to do such a convincing impersonation.

Or, they tried to carefully rec a very niche fic in a very niche fandom with very few potential readers to someone who sounded potentially interested without mentioning the fandom, since mentioning the fandom in the BFE thread tends to result in massive wank, no matter the context.

Given the long, squeeful comment and obvious dedication to the topic spanning many 100 words threads on FFA, I don't think they would be interested in causing trouble for a potential writer.

Was it dumb? Probably. Will they do it again? Probably not. Was it malicious? Given the involvement in the extremely tiny and niche fandom, I'd say no.

(It might still be the troll, though, since it's been stated several times that nonnies have a crappy Aquatics-dar.)

I'm blaming the mods of every exchange who allow this "tee hee it's not REALLY Nazis except it is" bullshit. Including the YT ones. Seeing a Nazi fandom come up again and again in requests and pinch hits is grotesque.

The trappings would be the fact that the main character is the brother of a famous Nazi serving in a Nazi army, and the erasure would be the fact that instead of doing the stuff the Wehrmacht was actually doing in North Africa like putting all the Jews in concentration camps where they died of typhus, this unit is just sitting around in the desert being wacky "stray puppies", to quote the author.

It's not a nuanced depiction of the lives of ordinary Germans under Nazism because the setup has been deliberately constructed so as not to confront the characters with difficult choices. They don't have to think about what it means to fight the Allies on behalf of Hitler (or conversely, let the Red Army overrun Germany) because the Allies mysteriously have no interest in attacking them. They're not being sent to do the easy or cannon-foddery shit you assign your obviously quirky and defective soldiers to do like machine-gunning civilians into trenches or besieging Stalingrad because the High Command has, for equally mysterious reasons, decided to let them spend the war sitting around in the desert with their thumbs up their asses. It's borderline apologetics, designed to generate characters as close to Nazis as humanly possible without actually making them complicit in anything bad.

If you want to kink on Nazi uniforms without getting shit for it, dress some guy up in an SS uniform and then send him shopping for bread on a made-up continent, don't do this crap.
