How do you make Yuletide more difficult for yourself, coalies?

Personally, I game specifically to get requests for fics that take time and effort to write (which I do enjoy), and then set the bar so high for myself that I end up scrambling in panic. I literally just scrapped two draft ideas because they were "too simple". I'll be back in December to cry about how I won't make the deadline.

characters that were not nominated - can you use them?

The fandom I am looking at has a nominated character that I like to write for. However, I usually write her with another character (it's my head canon that they went from being close to becoming enemies). Can I include the unnominated character? This is for a treat BTW.

You can, but you should consider whether the person you're writing for wants a headcanon that isn't indicated in the canon about a character they aren't asking for.

does anyone have a template re: emailing the mods for additional clarification on a letter/sign-up? How much or how little info should I include?

I don’t have a template because I don’t email mods often but I have sent some.

First, Yuletide mods said on the admin post when assignments went out to include your assignment link when asking questions about your assignment, and to not ask about locked/placeholder letters until at least October 29.

When asking questions if it’s a general thing/could apply to multiple fandoms you could keep it general. Though if they requested like 6-8 fandoms and you’re like "I really need an answer regarding the fandom we matched on" I wouldn’t say that so directly but I would say for example "How does the major character death dnw apply to canon deaths? Particularly for (this canon)". If it’s a fandom-specific question that can’t be made more general I’d just ask directly and embrace the fact that the mods make up decoy questions.

It’s nice to say hi and I always sign it with my username but like I don’t think that’s required (especially when they have a link to your assignment so like they know who you are from that).

Mods will reply to confirm they passed your question along and will send you another email with the recip’s response if they get one.

It's funny the things canon review shows up. I don't have subtitles so I looked up the script to get a location spelling right and the last third of what is supposedly the shooting script is almost nothing like the final script. They end up in the same place but by completely different routes.

I don't love it and it would give me an exasperated chuckle for sure but I'd probably ignore it. On the positive side, it's at least possible to knock this recipient's socks off!

like how do you request a canon and then dnw most of the canon?

how exactly do you expect someone to write about jaenelle and karla, who bonded over their creepy uncles wanted to rape them, when you aren't allowed to mention incest or rape? these themes are super important to both characters and literally formed their personakities

how is worldbuilding supposed to happen, if basoically all the canon things are no go?

it would make sense to dnw graphic, on screen rape

but not to dnw the topic entirely because how ??? rape is present from quite literally the prologue onward

almost all characters have some degree of it in their backstories

like are we supposed to ignore every character who can't do magic because they were raped?

are we supposed to ignore every character who is mentally unstable/in the twisted kingdom because they were raped?

you cannot even MENTION Tersa, because she's crazy and unable to wear a jewel becaue of rape
