It's possible they use a screenreader. Some of them don't do well with italics or bold, or they read it in a funny voice.

Oh good point.

Logically they probably mean formatting emphasis, but "other emphasis" is a bit vague.

I'm sure they threw in "other emphasis" because most fic writers use italics for emphasis, but they wanted to make sure that they weren't suddenly going to get a fic filled with bold and/or underlining.

I think "other formatting used to show emphasis" would be clearer but this makes sense for 99% of people.

My brain read "a bit vague" as "a bit ominous" (how? who knows), and now I can't stop thinking about what could be done with ominous fic exchanges.
