My recipient is a really good writer and I'm intimidated about doing one of their prompts in case they're like I could have written this myself better

I can only speak for myself, but I request things specifically because I cannot write them myself, for whatever reason. Maybe I can't get into that character's head, maybe the style I want/the canon style isn't something I enjoy/can/feel able to write, maybe I like a pairing, but don't know canon that well, etc. etc.

But also, and perhaps mainly; if I write it myself, I know what happens. You're doing good, coalie.

Fingers crossed!!! At least I know they aren't writing the same fandom because they never offer and request the same things, so there won't be any direct comparison

But it's way more fun to read someone else writing the idea than to write it yourself (at least it is if I'm asking for it in an exchange). If you write it, I don't know what's going to happen, and I didn't have to put the effort into writing it myself.

Like, I *could* crochet myself some new mittens - but mittens that someone else made for me are so much nicer, because someone else took the time, and I didn't have to, and maybe they're different than I expected in a really fun way, and also, who doesn't love to get a gift, even if it's not quite as good as I would have made for myself?

Plus, if I wanted to write it myself, I would have - I want to read it, not write it.
