I’m curious why #1 is still there - they seem by all rights to be a chill recip with easy workable requests, and 2/3 of their fandoms are single book canons, one of which is fairly popular.

Personally I don't do underage and am intimidated by the love of 'elegaic prose', and apparently Wraethhu is at least 6 books long and I don't know where the characters appear.

I doubt it'll be the last one picked up.

Their single-book canons are both realist fiction which tends to be less popular in Yuletide than speculative fiction.

Not only that, both of them are litfic from highly acclaimed authors. I'd be too intimidated to try to write fic!

I would do the Vuong book one except I’d have to reread it and also I don’t want to take on too much this Yuletide. But I’m surprised no one else has grabbed it.

I don't write underage or their first fandom would be an option, and I hated 'On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous' too much to finish it, so can't do that either. I'm also not sure my prose skills are up to replicating either of those books.

What did you dislike about On Earth?

/was considering reading it

I'm unfamiliar with the McEwan novel and looked it up on wikipedia. Coalies call it underage but is it really when he turns 18 and the fic could easily be set there? I was expecting him to be like 14 or something.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-27 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He's 17 when they first meet and have their initial charged interactions. I'm not saying my lines are totally rational, but I just can't do it, even if I go for the part when he's 18. I don't personally care if someone wants this or writes this, or writes much more underage stuff, but I won't.

I’m less bothered by the age (the other book is also about teen boys) than the fact that I just read the wiki summary of The Children Act and it sounds really bad. Maybe it reads better than the plot summary?

DC

I love McEwan's writing and all his novels that I read, but they are pretty much uniformly devastating and I'm not in the frame of mind to read one atm.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-27 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm of the unpopular opinion that none of McEwan's novels post-Atonement are worth reading, but he's highly celebrated and I doubt it's that bad.

The summary intrigues me a lot personally, but between my constant disappointment with 21st century McEwan and my hatred for Vuong, I'd better leave it to someone else.

i haven't read the book but i will say that i enjoyed the film.

tbh honestly for me it's less the underage element in and of itself so much as the tone makes it seem like they want sincere romance from it, while I tend to prefer age difference fic that engages with the potentially problematic elements of it, and tbh the age difference isn't even the only part of their relationship that makes sincere romance difficult for me.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-27 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, hope they get something they want, but the way they describe Adam's crush on Fiona as "loves her so much" and talks about Fiona being with a "younger man" rather than a teenager suggests to me that they and I would not have compatible views of the ship.

So, a good example of how underage and how to write it can be mildly polarizing even though overall YKINMKATO.

technically he's not really underage at all considering he's english and it's 16 there, but for me at least the specific issue of that kind of age gap isn't one that goes away overnight. though idk how other people feel about it.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Ocean Vuong and I keep looking at that request, but it's a book I'd feel weird about writing for. Possibly I've seen too many interviews with him and the book's autofiction-adjacent enough to ping my RPF buttons. (RPF is of course totally fine, I just have very unpredictable personal reactions to when I am personally comfortable engaging with it and when I'm not.)

I AM surprised no one's grabbed it for Wraeththu, I remember that being popular in LJ era fandom.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-27 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, Vuong's prose is deeply intimidating and he touches on a lot of sensitive subjects I'd be wary of doing justice?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
just look at the wordplay for third graders and ask chatgpt to turn it into prose and you'll get most of the way there. you will likely do better than him, even
