The fic contained incest and the mod was deeply triggered by that :ghost hughs: evil recip thought they'd get an EPH because they knew mod was too scquicked out to read

Okay, that's a bit more reasonable. But even then, incest is predicably likely to come up in this kind of exchange, (especially in the fics that require mod intervention,) it's not like they're squicked by tomato juice kink or something super specific. Like. Ban incest in your fest and then you won't have to close-read, or find someone who will agree in advance to mod anything incest-related that comes up, both of those are options. "Being able to close-read questionable fics" is one of the core job requirements?

And the accommodation ("get an assistant with non-overlapping triggers") is very doable.

If the mod had reason to believe this person knew they couldn't handle incest and assumed they'd be too triggered to check it properly (or if they were in fact triggered and not handling it well) the assumption of bad faith is a little more explicable. But also like. "Need to close read an incest fic" was a really predictable problem. They should have had something set up in advance. What the Mod Cabal should be for is to give people that kind of advice before they end up triggering themself.

Wait are you serious? I want to believe you are joking that the incest exchange mod is squicked by incest, but after seeing the rest of this I’m not even all that sure.

no, the mod said they were squicked by the ages, and their comod was squicked by the specific incest dynamic - not incest in general. saying the mod was triggered by incest in an incest ex is a huge misrepresentation of whats going on here

I am not in the server and made this joke thinking it was just a joke, but it turns out half of it is not even a joke. Reality really is weirder than fiction. It wouldn't surprise me if the mods also accused the recip of asking for help just to trigger them.

For sure. Maybe the mod(s) tried to read the fic but found it upsetting because of their squicks and that's why they went into the mods conversation with a certain amount of resentment already built up. It's understandable to feel hurt and upset by something and go "This person is responsible for the hurt, this must have been on purpose and there's something wrong with them", or put some amount of irrational blame on the recip for even making them try to read the fic that closely, but in that situation a mod should cool off and step away, not go looking for an echo chamber of random mods to validate feeling squicked and hurt by an unreasonable EPH request.

(...I swear I didn't start out this post with the intention to sound this petty, yet here we are. Doesn't feel great, does it?)

Maybe this is a hot take, but I don't think someone should mod an incest exchange if there's any incest configuration that squicks you so much you can't do something like this. Don't like parent/child incest? Don't run an incest exchange.

Agreed. Having limits is normal, but if those limits are things that are just not possible but likely to appear in large amounts in your exchange, then maybe you should rethink if you're the right person for the job.

Tbh, I also think that for an incest exchange, if you want to mod it then you should be pretty okay with underage sex, too. It’s pretty common in incest works. If any type of incest, or underage sex generally, squicks you so much that you can’t do a close read of a fic like that, then perhaps modding an incest exchange is best left to someone else.

If you need the Relationshipping mod to look over your gift, please consider requesting ships they enjoy! These include The Bear cousincest and MCU related!AUs for this year, or evergreen Oasis brocest. Always make sure your creator didn't include any of the mod's DNWs.

Maybe they should... get over it and read it anyway? Why are they hiding behind "squicked"? That's just a word for finding something gross. Many things gross me out and I can still read them just fine. If they are least claimed it was triggering to them in a way that couldn't be anticipated by the exchange theme I'd be more understanding but this just seems lazy.

There are other options than "force yourself to read a thing you find uncomfortable to read" and "bring the issue to a bunch of other random mods to complain about it".
