Well you can't request ships in Yuletide, so in that sense it's not really an option.

But there's nothing evil about requesting the two characters and putting prompts for shippy fic in the optional details.

I love when yuletide gets going and I start getting kudos on old fics for fandoms people only think of at this time of year

they ought to make yuletide a gen fest, really. less complicated and less potential for disappointment.

Could very well kill Yuletide. The ship vs gen numbers are usually pretty split but you have to wonder how many were written by/for people who otherwise wouldn’t have signed up if gen was 100% guaranteed as opposed to a % probability based on your fandom makeup* and prompts.

* My fandoms have never had gen written for them in Yuletide and I never see requests for it…

I’m generally about 50/50 in terms of my requests between “this is an interesting canon and I’m really curious to see what fanwork for it would look like” and “this is my Special Little Guy and I am constantly putting him into Situations in my head”

My main blorbo-generating fandom for the past few years is Yuletide eligible - I actually first discovered it from Yuletide!

if i'm only nominating a couple of minor characters for something should throw in lead characters/etc even if I don't personally want them, or is it up to me to do whatever? I know there's no specifiic rule about it but is there like, a commonly accepted right thing to do? i haven't done an exchange this big before

This year, they've written an incredibly patronizing promo for French Revolution RPF that has all the hallmarks of someone who's going to be a nightmare if you don't write it exactly a certain way.

probably some book or album - i'd have to look up which ones are new. i don't really watch tv and movies as they come out, and i definitely don't play new games as they come out.

Prompter feels the need to point out that the film is based on a real-life event, in case someone doesn't know (fair enough), but then ... also doesn't actually say what the real-life event is!

On the flipside, they also don't say what the movie is about, except that it's about "a historic event" (see above).

I also cannot quite tell if they are interested in the movie or in historical RPF? Maybe they think those are pretty much the same? It does really make me want to read their letter, though.

Someone whose writing I really love and am a little intimidated by seems is requesting the same canon as me for Yuletide! And what I like about this canon seems to be very in line with their usual taste! Yay! But from their canon promo it seems like from this specific canon they’re looking for something completely different than I am lol. Trying to decide whether to bait them by prompting for things they like and I would be decently happy to receive or to only prompt things I’m obsessed with and roll the dice.

Probably not me, but as someone who tends to request the same fandoms I'm offering, what I focus on to promo/request is not necessarily the full scope of what I would be willing or even excited to write for it. Especially at the broader-strokes promo stage I'm likely to focus on those of my fandom-specific likes I expect to have more mass appeal or take less complex explanation, and even writing my full requests I may exclude things that I do actually love but know I'm more picky about the details of than is reasonable for a gift fic.

tl;dr I say roll the dice! Just because they didn't name it as a main appeal of the canon for them in a promo post doesn't mean they wouldn't love to write it.

I get how someone could be careless about checking the numbers on a fandom that was still eligible last year, but I'm always so curious about the thought process of people rolling up to nominate fandoms with like 70k existing fics for Yuletide. Failed to read even the most basic one-line description of what the exchange is about? Never once ever looked at the AO3 fic section for this fandom they're so keen to read or write for? Knowingly shooting the moon and just crossing their fingers in hopes the mods somehow won't notice them sneaking it in?
