Nominations Fails

(Anonymous) 2025-09-20 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mods have posted a list of some nominations they've spotted so far that are going to be rejected unless changed:

https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/125368.html

I get how someone could be careless about checking the numbers on a fandom that was still eligible last year, but I'm always so curious about the thought process of people rolling up to nominate fandoms with like 70k existing fics for Yuletide. Failed to read even the most basic one-line description of what the exchange is about? Never once ever looked at the AO3 fic section for this fandom they're so keen to read or write for? Knowingly shooting the moon and just crossing their fingers in hopes the mods somehow won't notice them sneaking it in?

We've seen nominations for relationships, original characters, or Reader characters.

Wow!

That seemed like an extra-long list but I checked and it's only 19 vs 13 last year, so a bit longer but not completely out of scale.

I think some of them are people who legit want a small subset and don't know how to do that (like the Baldur's Gate thing, or Gravity Falls has a recent sequel series with no AO3 tag and afaict one fic total) or just being completely unaware it has a fandom at all (I had no idea Dirk Gently was even in danger of meeting the yuletide limit!) But like. Deltarune? Enterprise? what.

...at least nobody nominated HP. yet. this year.

Since they mentioned Baldur's Gate a second time after specifying it needed a different fandom tag, I figure some people just messed up in nominating old characters while others genuinely went ahead and tried to nominate Astarion.

I wonder if anyone's actually written Readerfic for Yuletide.

I'm sort of squicked by, but also weirdly charmed by, the idea.

Oh, almost certainly.

Depending on how strict your definition of readerfic is vs general fourth-wall-breaking or real world crossovers, I did last year.

Of course this is yuletide - there are some canons where readerfic is the thing that makes the most sense.

Isn't most interactive fiction or CYOA fic technically readerfic?

Yep. There are also canons (especially VN and RPG canons) where the player character is a sufficiently blank slate that writing with them might as well make it readerfic.

Huh? No?

CYOA fanworks? Most of the ones I've read have been about a canon character even if told in second person.

You've read very different CYOA fic than I have.

DC

I think the point still stands that CYOA is just a format. Just like non-interactive fic in 2nd person POV, it can be feature a self-insert blank slate character or not, depending on what you want to do with it.

I believe people have but not in the "Tony Stark gently strokes Y/N's hair" type way. Second person literary style stuff about books, I just can't remember which fandoms.
