i don't care if people want to do the recursive fanwork thing, but that feels like the kind of thing that should come from fans of the fic. nominating your own fic is weird.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I hate recursive, but don’t you need authors permission to nom? If so, the author nomming makes it cleaner.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-16 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
A general blanket permission like many people have in their profile would suffice.

Re: Evidence Post

I think the bigger problem is that someone on ffa also pointed out that it's a WIP that hasn't been updated since May. But you're right, it feels really weird, like something you'd see on Wattpad, given the way they're promoting it in the evidence post.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Recursive fanwork isn't a rare fandom.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree but i'm also not particularly bothered about the sanctity of yuletide or whatever with it being included. it's just embarrassing to try and get people to write fic of your fic if it doesn't already have the kind of fans that want to do that.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
They also say "some of the prompts we want to give" which makes it seem like they're going to request it themselves, not technically against the rules, but I don't think I have ever seen someone nominating and requesting fic for their own work before.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-16 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that there are multiple writers means they might be just requesting and writing for each other. Which seems weird, because then it wouldn’t be _fanfic_ of the thing that’s requested.

who nominated their own fic?

Oh my god. Not only is that SO tacky—that feels like a complete OCs thing. You can’t just make a fan work AU and label it a new fandom.

Another person doing the same thing here:

https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/124620.html?thread=3006668#cmt3006668

I guess this is the year of nominating your own fanfic for yuletide, huh.

That person's been around long enough I'm surprised they don't have more shame

GC's always been a little off-kilter with social norms and has needed them explained to him in the past. He means well but it's not my turn to explain to him why we don't do this.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
No. NO. Oh my god. I am half horrified, half in awe of this person. Also, why not just nominate the actual image at the end of the credits? Why nominate your fic about the picture. I have so many questions.

I can't believe someone's unironically doing the adjective!ProperNoun naming convention in the year of our lord 2025.

Fun fact: that cat is the logo for Mary Tyler Moore's production company, and the cat's name is Mimsie. Mimsie was often doing a special little thing in the credits for individual series.

https://mtm.fandom.com/wiki/Mimsie

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MvwCHNfGK2M

On the series finale, Mimsie (possibly portrayed by another cat) is shown unconscious and dying on screen, connected to an IV, a heart monitor, and medical equipment; as the credits roll the heart monitor beeps and then as the credits end the heart monitor flatlines marking the end of St. Elsewhere and Mimsie's death. Coincidentally, Mimsie died shortly after the airing of this episode at the age of 20.

In conclusion: I think we've really been sleeping on Mimsie as a fanfic subject, guys. A rich text!

...wait, is the whole St. Elsewhere universe actually Mimsie's dream? I think you might have broken something open here

So when I submitted the story as a treat, I made it clear I was hoping for sequels and follow-ups, and indeed a couple of further stories turned up in the subsequent round.

But since then, it's been quiet on the Bartholomew Street Animal Shelter front, and so I still want more about these characters. As a micro-fandom, the needed canon is quickly reviewed, and I have high hopes of being showered with more adventures this coming Yule.

From the promo post. I want someone to write me 1K+ long sequels to my 700 words long fic because I can't be bothered! Ok lol.

I love “I made it clear I was hoping for sequels and follow-ups”. Yes, that’s how fandom works. I create a fandom and them try to subtly coerce people into creating fan works for it.

I have zero issue with someone wanting to promo a thing they made, but the framing is offputting. If SH were Yuletide-eligible (lol) then the way to go about this would be to frame kitten!Holmes as a prompt in your letter - but of course, that would make it optional, wouldn't it. I'm guessing optional isn't good enough for them.

Re: Evidence Post

(Anonymous) 2025-09-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
A denial and an appeal and a repeated denial!

[excerpted]
mods: After reading the story, we feel that it doesn't stand alone; it relies heavily on the reader knowing the Sherlock Holmes canon, which is not Yuletide eligible.

nominator: I hope I can persuade you to change your minds and approve the nomination - or failing that, at least to more clearly articulate how this decision aligns with broader Yuletide policies.

mods: We appreciate this is disappointing, but are firm on this one. We hope that this discussion has served your goal in one small aspect - bringing the concept to the attention of a wider audience.
