i don't care if people want to do the recursive fanwork thing, but that feels like the kind of thing that should come from fans of the fic. nominating your own fic is weird.

I hate recursive, but don’t you need authors permission to nom? If so, the author nomming makes it cleaner.

I think the bigger problem is that someone on ffa also pointed out that it's a WIP that hasn't been updated since May. But you're right, it feels really weird, like something you'd see on Wattpad, given the way they're promoting it in the evidence post.

They also say "some of the prompts we want to give" which makes it seem like they're going to request it themselves, not technically against the rules, but I don't think I have ever seen someone nominating and requesting fic for their own work before.

I sympathize with liking an obscure thing related to a mega popular thing but it still feels weird to have HP and Star Wars in the tagset

Star Wars mostly doesn't bother me because there are parts of that you can happily write in while including nothing from the main trilogy except that the Empire exists, so I try not to be bothered by HP either but it is much more difficult. >:(

I can see why the mods didn't approve it, because it looks like backdoor RPF for some random internet psychic lady, but "Connecticut hedge fund wife with sudden onset clairvoyance" is a great Ghost Whisperer spinoff style plot.

On MCYT/SMP: The correct answer to "how are these things different?" is not "they're just different!"

Mods: "The issue here is that we're getting a lot of evidence posts that say "This one is different. This one is different," but without information that clarifies how they're different - and we'd appreciate this in text."

Drive-By Commentator: I think it just comes down to it being hard to explain how some are different beyond the fact that they are different servers with different worlds, especially in more comedic than lore-heavy (in the sense of something very fantasy/drama roleplay based like Dream SMP) servers.

It's easier when a server has a distinct gimmick or big overarching plotline, but sometimes the difference is just "it's a different world with different events".

Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 (as separate fandoms): Both are set in the same world and share some characters, but have standalone stories, different tones, and different approaches to worldbuilding, while some of the main characters appear in only one of the two.

Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii back-and-forth

nominator: The game is in a completely different setting from any of the other games, can stand alone (literally I have only played one other Yakuza game) and I am absolutely fine with disqualifying Majima himself for Yuletide/this fandom

mods: Our understanding is that this is a direct continuation of the main character's plot from other, too-large-for-Yuletide games, so we're inclined to reject, but if you can show us how this isn't a direct continuation, we're willing to discuss further.

nominator: Honestly he has amnesia for 80%+ of the game so it's really just "and then he is doing pirate things with a new set of characters and deliberately ignoring the plot of the previous games" As mentioned, I'm fine with excluding Majima himself if he's the problem, but the setting of the game itself is new, the vast majority of the characters are new, and the game can be played without knowledge of anything else that happened in the previous games. But if you're inclined to reject, that's fine.

mods: ...after reviewing the series as a whole with someone familiar with it, that although this game presents a new setting and many new characters, this installment fits into the overall series continuity.

nominator: Just looking at last years tag set, canons such as Andor and the Agatha All Along, which would seem to be in the same situation, have been allowed. What is the distinguishing feature?

Ngl, I agree with the nominator about Andor - AAA was self-contained and doesn't really fit into the wider continuity of the MCU, so I can see the argument. If the protagonist of a series has amnesia for the duration of a game, surely that keeps the events separate enough? I don't know anything about the Yakuza games.

I've played all the Yakuza games, and I do agree that it can stand alone -- especially if they want to nominate only the new characters. To me, it's a lot more self-contained than those two canons they listed as examples that the mods approved, and it feels really unfair that they'd allow those and not this one. So yeah, I'm completely on the nominator's side here.
