nomination slots

(Anonymous) 2025-09-17 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
if i'm only nominating a couple of minor characters for something should throw in lead characters/etc even if I don't personally want them, or is it up to me to do whatever? I know there's no specifiic rule about it but is there like, a commonly accepted right thing to do? i haven't done an exchange this big before

Up to you to do whatever. No expectation of nominating the mains.

A lot of people will add their nominations to the nomination coordination post and indicate if they have free slots, so if someone has specific character wishes, they can ask you to nominate them on their behalf.

But you also do not have to do this. You can just nominate the ones you want and be done with it.

If you don't like the characters, don't ask for them. Simple as that.

That... isn't even what they're asking.

I usually do this when I have free slots. It's a nice thing to do if you're otherwise not going to use them, but you're under no obligation to do so.

usually i'll check the coordination post. if somebody's requesting a character nom and i have space available and i don't dislike the character i might add them, but there's not really an etiquette about that sort of thing. if someone is upset about the tagset not including someone they really wanted, well, it was their prerogative to nominate that character themselves in the first place.

It's up to you to do whatever. I've done both just the characters I like and also added characters I don't plan on requesting so other people can potentially use them.

There's no right/wrong but there's playing the odds?

Basically if you only nominate the characters you want, and nobody else nominates, then people looking to offer will have a pretty good idea of what you're looking for, which might or might not be what you want to do! If you throw in the lead characters, you might get people who aren't interested in your minor characters offering (or requesting). Do you want that or not?

Generally, if it's a fandom where I just truly want the fandom to have any fic at all and want to max my odds of matching on that fandom at all, I'll put in the minor characters of my secret heart, add a couple major characters I would also be happy to get, and then request "any". But if you truly are only interested in requesting the minor characters, there's not really any point.

Also, if it's a fandom with a huge amount of canon, it can sometimes actually increase the odds people will offer if the character noms make it clear what part of canon you want. Like if it's a 30 book series but the only nominated characters only appear in Book 2, people might be more likely to offer, especially in a bucket offer, because they know they can easily review the important canon, than if you also threw in characters who appear in every book.

...and there's always the possibility somebody else will nominate even if you don't think it's very likely, so there may be more characters anyway.
