I was REALLY excited for this one fic and then it was "lol mental illness" time, and this crazy coalie's feelings were hurt. (At least it wasn't my gift.)

As another crazy person, sometimes I wonder if I’m the only one that prefers characters with mental illness? I don’t like “actually Loki is on the spectrum and that’s why he’s an asshole” fic, but if someone has textbook behavior I’d rather them just be what they are rather than “weird” or “evil”. It feels like the difference between “gay for you” and just making a character gay/bi, if that makes sense...It gets tiring seeing someone being completely x and the narrative acting like it’s a unique thing when there is a whole field of diagnosis.

Anyway bluh sorry rant.

I wanted X lives and I got X dies just as in canon.
I wouldn't have minded as much if the character was at least front and center, but they were a background character at most.

Couple that with a random appearance of a popular fanon pairing I'm not into and I'm fairly sure this was an Any offerer who didn't think that people might request background characters.

They did try with the one character they focused on, and I appreciate that a lot, I'm just disappointed they didn't focus on all the characters i requested.

I love the John Cage piece, but wow, all the fics for it this year are painfully bad.

I was excited to see Cyberchase in the collection, but... the fic did not live up to expectations. It doesn't break any rules, but I wish I'd seen the show in the last few years or knew any of the recip's other fandoms so I could write them a treat.

Maybe someone else will know them?

My gift went to pinch hits and was quickly picked up so I assumed one of my requests sparked off a clear idea for the writer, but instead I got the most 'Writing in circles to (barely) make wordcount'-feeling fic I've ever recieved in an exchange.

I really wanted to like this fic, and am normally not that picky about typos, but I feel like at minimum not misspelling both of the main characters' names ought to be something of a baseline.

I can tell my writer tried, but it's so OOC it's actually giving me second-hand embarrassment. My sense of dread is mounting as I realize I still have so much left to read, and then I'm going to have to comment.

The Ladyhawke fic :(

Seemed so promising- 13k, interesting ships, interesting premise, great looking tags- and maybe it got better, but the first section was just so much telling to orient the story and so boring I gave up.

This is obviously a disappointment due to personal preferences, but there are so many fandoms I have clicked on tonight only to find that what I expected to be slash turned out to be het or gen. Which is cool. Just not what I was hoping to read.

The recip gave a glowing comment, so I won't link -- but man, second person and no capitalization was not what I was looking for when I opened this fic for one of my favorite small fandoms.

At least it makes me glad I decided not to request it this year! And there's another fic for it that looks much better, so that's good!

It's an extremely petty disappointment, but I saw a lot of interest in one of my prompts, and indications at least one person was working on a treat for it, and then...nothing. Logic brain is completely chill and understanding of this, but emotion brain is disappointed.

I enjoyed my other gifts, but this one has not only an unrequested ship but also a generally skeevy, voyeuristic feel to it, and it makes me vaguely uncomfortable.
It also gets the canon timelines wrong. Sigh.
