Eh, I’m a little bummed that painting their own leaves didn’t seem to help, but from what I remember of every O. Henry story I’ve ever read, a shaggy dog story with an ironic or depressing ending is par for the course. I feel like the lesbians part is incidental, but hey, if my wife and I turn out to be immortal I’ll let you know.

There's a difference between immortal lesbians and ending the story with a character's ashes in an urn. Maybe that's the kind of depressing ending the recip wanted, and if so, I am genuinely happy for them, but the story disappointed me and this is the thread to complain about that.
