Isn't there a minimum age of 18, technically? I don't actually think it's spitefic, but I don't think it is written by an 18 year old, either.

Well, I'm old, so by saying young I'm thinking early 20ish, somewhere in that decade, without a lot of writing experience (and maybe doesn't read a lot of good fic, just PWPs--those can be good, but many are not).

Yeah, I think if you're that bad in your early 20s, you no longer get the sympathy head-pat of being too young to criticize. I don't think that anyone should flame them, I wouldn't reject (I just don't do that), but like: this fic is not good. It's not actively malicious, but it is terrible and I think we should be allowed to say it is terrible.

Yes, it's terrible. I wouldn't comment and say that, but I think their lack of comments or kudos are telling them that. Hopefully they see it as room for improvement if anything.

I don't blame the recip for rejecting it, though I probably would have done it after the Yuletide rush when maybe the writer isn't paying attention anymore.

Well most of us lie about our age when we're 12-17, but there are people 30+ who unironically are very WOWZERS THAT WAS HOT :PPPPPP and write shitty. If their main fandom is that way too, how will they know what good fic looks like?

I'm *swipes hand across mouth* fifty-ish-ish, and there are plenty of fans my age and older who leave unintelligible squee about hotness and HNNNNNG and ignore stories with careful, crafted characterization. To each his very own. (I'm not above leaving "hot" comments, but typically there's a lot more to it than that.) So I guess really they could be any age. It just reads younger and less well-read to me.

I hope they're not on coal, or if they are, they take it as a challenge to improve.
