The way some people on FFA are equating "got a gift by an unskilled writer" with "I was wronged" really opens my eyes to how weird BFE can be about exchanges.

In the past people were more open minded about their recipients, consuming new fandoms and the gifts they’d receive. Now it’s all about gaming away from “bad writers” and non-commenters and gaming for the “perfect” assignment.

Is it just me or are DNW lists getting longer and longer every year? This is me browsing FIAB requests, but no reason to assume that Yuletide would be vastly different.

Maybe I'm just old? I love a good, clear DNW as much as the next coalie, but I do think your list of likes/prompts should ideally be as long as/longer than your DNW list. Or at least include *something* I can work with.

I feel like the last few exchanges I've done, the requests are just people posting endless DNW lists, and a lot of the DNWs are contradictory or too vague (like requesting ship fic in a horror/gothic fandoms where all the requested characters are zombies or ghosts and then DNW character death and necro without clarifying).

ongoing canons - letter preferences?

if you are requesting in an ongoing canon that will have more issues/episodes/whatever after signups close, how do you write your letter? prompt up to what's aired by the end of signups, come back to the letter and add prompts as it goes on, something else?

do you have a different preference if you're getting assigned to write for a canon like this? what if it's a miniseries that ends after signups but still gives some writing time (like, the penguin finale airs on nov 10, as opposed to an ongoing comics canon that will be running into 2025)?

I usually let the writer know that I'll be caught up with all canon so they don't have to worry about spoilers. For adding additional prompts I think it's ok so long as your new prompts don't contradict your old ones. Like if you prompted Bob fic based on loving him in the early eps, then he takes a turn that makes you despise him then it wouldn't be fair to alter your prompts to match your new opinion. not that I'm still bitter about the recipient who last minute changed their letter, which made my fic look like spitefic

Plus some writers may copy or download your letter and not go back to the original so won't see changes

OK, so I know you can't ask for Any characters and say "not that one", but why not, as long as you're only ruling out one character and there are several characters in the tag set?

Someone has to offer 2 characters or more, right, so how is that different to if you specifically asked for the other character they offered and then said you didn't want the first one?

What characters to request

I am requesting a fandom where I want fic centered on, say, Charles. But almost all my prompts also include Sabrina, Dylan, and Alex, and I have a hard time seeing how you'd write anything without at least one of those three. Should I request all four or just Charles?

Are there other minor characters your writer might inexplicably focus on, like Charles & that person who shows up at the very end of the spin-off?

a lot of you may already know this but some of the newbies might not.

if you're unsure about your fandom's eligibility, make sure you check completion status as well as word count for fics in english.

i almost sobbed when it looked like one of my beloved fandoms was ineligible, but a lot of those fics turned out to be wips and that halved the number of countable fics.

i think i am gonna leave this particular fandom off my requests slate this year. most of my fandoms, i'm fine with getting gen or ship or whatever. but there's this one where i would be bitterly disappointed if i got gen. i don't want to see the platonic version of these characters - they are totally banging, dammit! i think what i might do is save that fandom and ship for rarepairs next year or something.

anyone else still deciding what to nom and changing your mind?

I had a big slate of requests and then I got really obsessively into two of them and now I’ve nixed the rest of those requests in favor of one singular third request I’m almost definitely not going to get LOL

Uggh we've already had one drawn-out argument where people are talking past each other about this so here:

If you want to request a fandom where the nominated characters include Amy, Beth, and Jo, and you would be happy about fic with Amy and Beth, Amy and Jo, Beth and Jo, or all three:

If you request no characters:
You can match with: Anyone who offered the fandom with any combination of characters.
You should do this if: You want to maximize your chances of matching on that fandom at all AND you would be sincerely happy to get fic about any nominated characters.
You should use additional tags: The first one, per the FAQ.
You should write details that: Have at least one request that would work for each of the nominated characters (This could be general prompts that work for anyone or separate prompts for all nominated characters.)

If you request Amy, Beth and Jo:
You can match with: Only people who offered Amy AND Beth AND Jo; or people who offered Any
You should do this if: You only want to match with people who offered Amy, Beth, AND Jo; and don't care if that reduces your odds of matching on the fandom.
You should use additional tags: That line up with what you actually want
You should write details that: Clarify the additional tag you chose, include prompts you would enjoy receiving that contain the characters you requested, and don't DNW any of the characters you requested.

If you request Amy and Beth:
You can match with: Only people who offered Amy AND Beth; Amy AND Beth AND Jo; or Any
You should do this if: You want to maximize your chances of getting a fic with both Amy and Beth and wouldn't mind getting one without Jo.
You should use additional tags: that clarify if you only want fic with both Amy and Beth, or if you would be okay with fic that has one but not the other.
You should write details that: Clarify the additional tag you chose, include prompts you would enjoy receiving that contain the characters you requested and don't all require characters you didn't request, and don't DNW any of the characters you requested.

If you request ONLY Amy:
You can match with: People who offered ONLY Amy; people who offered any subset that includes Amy; people who offered ANY.
You should do this if: You want to maximize your chances of matching on this fandom but also make sure you get at least one of your favorite characters.
You should use additional tags: Use "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form" if you want state in your optional details that you would also be okay with a fic that has Beth but not Amy. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
You should write details that: include at least some prompts for only Amy or for Amy with author's choice of other characters; clarify and expand on the additional tag, if you chose one.

If you only want fic that ships Amy/Beth, Amy/Jo, or Beth/Jo: find an exchange that matches on ships.

There's lots of more complicated requesting problems and edge cases we can argue about but please everybody at least start from understanding how the system works.
