yeah. I have gotten truly bad fic but it was written with care so i found it charming. author did their best. its a gift exchange not the nobel prize

It depends. There are a couple of writers in my fandoms who are not that great, but they do make an effort to write something related to the prompts in the request they receive. Their writing style might be sparse and emotionally flat, but there's clearly some effort to create something based on what the recipient said they wanted.

It's easier to engage with that than a fic that's just canon rehash written by a technically more proficient writer.
