Butts are definitely on my to-request list for this Yuletide!

some people are popcorning that sarajayechan is STILL using the evidence post as a promo post

I don't think there's anything really popcorn-worthy yet, but I'm sure there will be!

The way some people on FFA are equating "got a gift by an unskilled writer" with "I was wronged" really opens my eyes to how weird BFE can be about exchanges.

In what world is FFXIV a “small fandom”

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
In the past people were more open minded about their recipients, consuming new fandoms and the gifts they’d receive. Now it’s all about gaming away from “bad writers” and non-commenters and gaming for the “perfect” assignment.

Maybe we just old, coalie. We’ve watched the world turn to coal.

The questions for me are, are people really treating the fifth expansion of FFXIV as a small fandom and does it actually stand on its own?

I feel skeptical. But I know nothing, so.

I feel old! Mostly tired though.

I feel like the culture used to be more like, you're going to get an assignment and it's going to be a little bit unexpected and daunting and then you're going to figure your way through it and THAT's a major part of the fun.

And now it's more, you know your writing niche, you know what writing is fun for you, so you try to get the right assignment that hits in your sweet spot. And if you get a bad match and say so, the reaction is less "Yeah, it's wild, isn't it?" and more "Mm, you should have gamed."

Dunno if either is better but I like the first one. Maybe it just fits my own neuroses best. I see a lot of the heavy gamers signing up to the most exchanges. It obviously works for them.

I don't care about my gift nearly as much as delivering a satisfactory gift, but I suppose exchanges need the people who care most about receiving, in order for people like me to feel really special when a tailored gift hits the nail on the head.

well, technically it'll depend on the number of fics for that segment.

if they let int in this year, however, it's likely it won't get in next year.

If they decide it doesn't stand alone, it won't matter if it's small enough.

+1

And a great big deal is made of "id mismatch" if not everything aligns.

Back in the day, I thought "idfic" meant a story might not be the best quality-wise, but it sure was enjoyable on other levels. Now, "id" seems to refer to one's taste in fic and if a fic is "iddy' it is perfectly tailored to you and hits your every like...

FFA is even changing the definition of fandom slang to suit itself. It's almost becoming its very own fannish space.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
fucking failmemers.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Those two definitions of id strongly overlap, though, because if something is full of your likes, you'll forgive it its other weaknesses and you might find yourself reccing it to someone only for them to be baffled that you thought it was good.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
well, yeah, but coal probably doesn't realize or won't admit how similar to FFA it is

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
coal is basically just a mini-ffa at this point and it sucks. they already have their own meme for being insufferably neurotic, they don't need coal.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Coal has always been neurotic, lol. I just like to hope it's in different ways.

Anyway the Yuletide discord's kind of dead, ffa is exhausting, EAD is okay but full of people with attitudes I dislike on ffa, and I like talking about Yuletide, so I guess I'm left with here.

Also I'm procrastinating on editing a fic that goes live on the weekend, so.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, maybe, but FFA seems to be pickier about any faults in fic, rather than more forgiving because a story "hit someone's id".

In the past, someone might not GAF about SPAG if the story had all their favorite kinks. Now it's like everyone over there is just itching to whine.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
this is very wack, i can assure you, as someone who got shit fic in the golden past of yuletide and immediately dropped every fandom i shared with those writers, thus gaming away from bad writing

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
True. And we also get random funny shitposts, and the absence of raving on about megafandoms is very refreshing indeed.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think your last sentence sums it up, except for "now". It isn't about id, it's a trend for everything. FFA is just picky, and it's seen as normal and fine to jump on recs and say something sarcastic or dismissive about them.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
+1... I got a fic by a famous wanker ten years ago and have never again requested that fandom in yuletide.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
i've always enjoyed coal as being a source of wanky weirdness. ffa's brand of neuroses is more obsessing over stats and ratios and how to game exchanges. and you know what, good for them if that's what they like, somehow, but it sucks how much it's colonized other fandom spaces.
