DNW lists

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me or are DNW lists getting longer and longer every year? This is me browsing FIAB requests, but no reason to assume that Yuletide would be vastly different.

Maybe I'm just old? I love a good, clear DNW as much as the next coalie, but I do think your list of likes/prompts should ideally be as long as/longer than your DNW list. Or at least include *something* I can work with.

I feel like the last few exchanges I've done, the requests are just people posting endless DNW lists, and a lot of the DNWs are contradictory or too vague (like requesting ship fic in a horror/gothic fandoms where all the requested characters are zombies or ghosts and then DNW character death and necro without clarifying).

The contradictory/vague stuff sucks, but I support ppl being extra clear about what they don't want and fortifying their defences, it's wild out here.

Best thing I’ve seen this year is “DNW: enemies to lovers” in the Enemies To Lovers exchange.

eh, i figure that person copied their dnw from other letter and forgot to proofread

I think it's a combo of there being a few people who clearly do not care about what their recipient wants and the mods usually siding with the writer for grey-area DNW breaks, so people want to be super clear.

For me personally I don't really care all that much about a long list so long as it doesn't make it impossible to write a story (obvs ymmv on this but usually so long as I can still write a canon-compliant story I wouldn't consider it impossible to write for) and so long as the list is clear. If something seems contradictory I'd err on the side of caution unless it makes it truly impossible (ie DNWing AUs and time travel but requesting characters who are not alive at the same point in time)

For myself I have a decently long list depending on the canon (sometimes I DNW all AUs because I specifically want canon fic, sometimes I just DNW specific ones if I'm fine with others) some of which are things where it's like this fic would be 100% ruined for me if these things showed up (like say rape), some of which are more like I COULD read this but in situations that are so specific that I don't want to risk it (like say omegaverse) and some things where it's like well I could read this but it'd make the fic the equivalent of receiving like cucumber lotion [or insert your own idea of a generic gift that shows the person buying for you doesn't know anything about you] and if I'm being allowed to write a request I may as well as for what I really want.

I do also though do my best to be clear and also to explain specifics if something seems contradictory (like say, I DNW parent death but it's canon for a requested character, I'd be clear if I meant that I would rather it not get mentioned at all or if I'm fine if it comes up but don't want a fic focused on it, etc)

Yep, this, especially when it comes to Yuletide. The YT mods are the worst when it comes to screwing over recips who received DNWs.

Are they still? I feel like the examples I’ve seen are from a while ago, and there’s been some changeover since then.

I don't like long DNW lists but mine grows longer with every exchange as writers find new and interesting ways not to write about the characters and relationships I requested.

I don't mind the length much, but I hate unclear ones.

+1

i don't mind how many they are, just make them concise.

it's extremely annoying. i'm from the thought process that if the vast majority of participants wouldn't even think of writing it without you mentioning it, you roll the dice and hope you don't get assigned to the .1% of participants who wild out every year. the only thing i bother dnw-ing are actual triggers.

I like this idea in theory, but in practice I end up adding DNWs because people do write them, especially common fanon takes on the characters.

I've started making my DNW lists shorter. I figure most people won't write most of those things, and it's easier to talk about what I do like or do want to give people ideas instead.

i think it's half people wanting to be as clear as possible, and half people who've done yuletide many years finding new "wtf someone wrote that unprompted"s and adding them to dnw.

it's mega annoying, and I wish the mods had decided to react differently to aurae who caused all of this rather than overemphasizing dnws

Aurae definitely did not cause the DNW creep. The DNW creep started long before Aurae's shenanigans and continued apace through and beyond them without any noticeable shifts in most fandoms, especially in Yuletide where most participants would be unaware that Aurae even existed.

Even if you ignore that, the way they did things isn't really the type to cause a ton of DNWs to spawn. Most of what they gifted was either so clearly bad faith for someone who already had the relevant DNWs that it didn't result in any changing in DNWs (the underage gift debacle), so out there that it didn't result in any new DNWs (the chili recipe), or already in the list of most common DNWs (the period sex thing, which is generally covered by bodily fluids DNWs).

They did cause a refinement of DNWs due to their shenanigans as a recipient (clarifying what "unrequested characters" or AU means), but I wouldn't say that caused an uptick. If anything that lowered DNWs since there were less of those types of DNWs afterwards.

Untherius is more likely to have an affect on Yuletide DNWs than Aurae is.
