Suspicions mounting at FFA that the two obscure German canons the mods note being completely unable to find any information on in the latest query post are, in fact, made up. The only trace of them on the internet appears to be ultra-short fics posted by otherwise empty AO3 account Siwwwwwa while nominations were ongoing. A newly created DW account has shown up in comments to claim they are not the nominator but one of the books totally exists, honest.

Not something that I had on my bingo card, I will admit. Yuletide is truly the exchange that keeps on giving.

A question for the coal hivemine from the coading realm, especially for those who use the Everything app: what do coalies feel an equitable use of donations looks like?

The app solicits for donations once yearly if Yuletide breaks past free hosting limits. Up until this year, it's always been a no-brainer decision - the combined cost of ALL exchange apps used to be nearly nothing. Paypal took a cut, then server costs were paid, I took a Treat Yo'self portion, and everything else went to charity.

This year, the Everything App has changed things. Due to the feature set + lots of data, the auto app will cost money every month into perpetuity. For transparency: each month that's $10 for the database, $7 for some hosting features, and a few dollars for burst traffic. The extra hosting features could be nixed, but that takes away the server being always up (users would have to awkwardly wait for spinup sometimes) and I'd be unable to debug easily. Human-factors-wise, time/effort goes into upkeep and new work.

What does the hivemine think should be done with donations this year? 100% to server fees, since there will always be more from now on? A small amount for the coadie? Some other split between coadie/fees/charity?

(This feels kinda weird to ask, but it would feel equally weird not to? The major constituency which donates is coal. One way or another, I'll keep the app up for the foreseeable future.)

First of all: you're GREAT, coadie, and you provide such an amazing service to the community!! The Everything app is fucking magic.

If you plan to continue to solicit donations only at Yuletide, I think it's fine if you sock away a year's worth of server costs first, and then put any extra to treating yourself and/or a charity, whichever you please. If I felt strongly about donating to a charity, I would do that directly; when I donate to you/the app, it's because I want to keep supporting the app. <333

Growing Things, short story by Paul Tremblay - not my thing, unfortunately. One of those many horror short stories where you get some vivid imagery, a hint of alarming humanity, and an ambiguous ending but it doesn't (at least to me) feel like it adds up to anything.

The Trollenberg Terror - currently watching this! It's pretty good fun so far, and I enjoy that the one sister really is psychic. It's on YouTube in full if anyone else wants silly late 50s creature (?) horror.

You might be able to find some that are ready and waiting for the letters post by searching DW or LJ.

If you request two characters that are together canonically, is it bad form for all of your requests to touch on their couple-ness?

I was curious about how many people might actually benefit from matching options like worldbuilding, so I checked last year's app, and 998 out of 6073 requests had no characters - that's about about 16%, so not a huge majority or anything, but significant (especially if you consider that a lot of people probably think you have to request characters, or have to request them just so they can DNW one.)

(216 of the no-characters requests were also no-optional details; there were 24 no-characters-no-details-no-letters)

Meanwhile there were 476 that used the word "worldbuilding" or a variation, of which 389 also requested characters, so almost 90% of those no-characters requests aren't requesting worldbuilding, at least by name.

I requested worldbuilding and a character only because there were several characters in the tagset (nominated by someone other than me - I nominated without characters) and I didn't want to ask for no characters (any) and get one particular character I dislike.

I am really excited about asking for worldbuilding in this fandom this year, because in truth I don't want any of the canon characters. I did receive a nice fic with the character I requested, but I would rather not have had a that-character-centric fic.
