This topic came up on ffa recently (stale meme I know) and I wanted coal’s opinion.

Do you care more about writing or reciving? Do you care more about writing the fic of someone’s heart or your own idea? Why do you (or don’t you) sign up?

I enjoy writing most because it’s the part I can control. A bad gift can’t ruin my exchange that way. I don’t need deadlines so I can treat without signing up fine, but I only like writing to other peoples prompts so I treat widely rather than writing on my own outside of exchanges. 99% of my fics I never would have written had someone else not requested or prompted for it. I love the feeling of knowing I hit exactly what they were hoping for or suprised them with something they never dreamed of by taking an interesting approach with a generic prompt.

The reason why I sign up rather than PH or treating only is because I want fic in fandoms I am not comfortable writing in. Usually my fandoms are so small that if I don't request then nobody will, or the people who do want stuff I wouldn't want to read if that's what their gift was. If the gift I get sucks then :( but I usually get treats and my main gifts are pretty good to great, so there’s an incentive even if theres a risk of a dud. I also make the letters I wish to recieve, so knowing that someone else possibly enjoyed their Yuletide thanks to being able to cater a fic to my heart’s ideal is the icing on top of the goodfic cake.

Thank you for making another evidence post this year. Based on the type of stories that resulted from last year's Yuletide, and the impossibility of separating out the cartoon from the novel (and the show), we have decided to reject this for this year and going forward, sorry.

Writers who do bonkers things FOR SURE. That is one of my favorite parts of yuletide haha. There are always people doing weird stuff and I live for it.

I thought characters were required when nominating a fandom, but if I'm reading correctly from the clarification post, they're not?

What happens if I nominate a fandom and no characters? People requesting/offering are saying they'll take any character at all?

Yes. It used to be that no characters implied worldbuilding but now it fully means write whatever you want. Even if someone mentions specific characters in their request, you can ODAO without remorse and write about whoever you want.

Definitely down into the hundreds at most, based on the way past years have gone - and we're probably going to get a second and final noms questions post in the next 24 hours or so announcing that they're down to the final few dozen and these are the things they need to get answers about in order to approve them!

Letter Bingo

Pop some ideas for bingo items for us to roll our own bingo cards (5x5?) once letters come around!

- User forgets to add AO3 username to letter; bonus if you know that their AO3 username is nothing like the username on their letter platform
- Letter longer than minimum assignment length
- Letter jump links exist but don't work
- Letter posted to letter post/app but is locked
- Unreadable font size/colour scheme
- New platform for letters you've never seen before (e.g. not DW/LJ, tumblr, Gdocs)
- Letter contains personal TMI
- Letter clearly belongs to fellow coalie as signalled via secret coalie handshake
- Formatting so perfect you shed a single tear
- Request in letter is clearly impossible (e.g. characters not nominated, fandom not approved)

- Letter posted to letters/post app but is a placeholder
- Unfinished letter with prompts for some fandoms while others never get filled in
- Request clearly asking for a different version of canon than the one that was nominated
- Request makes it obvious the requester is unfamiliar with/has completely misremembered what happens in canon
- Request from someone who hasn't finished the canon yet and is blithely unaware of a huge twist concerning their chosen character(s)
- Letter explicitly states that the requester wants one fandom more than the others
- Prompt where it's impossible to include all requested characters without any statement that the requester allows this
- Ranty judgemental DNWs going on about how disgusting it is anyone would write that
- Fandom where the only prompt is for a crossover with no hint of wanting anything else

It's kind of sad that the mods won't just separate the nominations out into episodes themselves. Or I guess maybe they can't? And it would mean those people nominated more fandoms than they were allowed, so there's that too. But there were six of the nine episodes I would have happily offered for and I was really hoping they'd all get in.

What's your jam, coalies? Answer as many or as few as you'd like.

- Do you start writing... before signups close? Pretty soon after? Reasonably before the deadline? In the danger zone? Pinch hits only? EPHs only?

- What do you have on in the background? A music genre? TV? Silence? White noise? An alternate dimension in which you wrote in a cafe?

- Do you write... sober, drunk, tired, high, first thing in the morning, after exercising, after shower thoughts, before work...?

- Is there something you do only during this most festive time of the year? Write longhand? Crack out a certain program? Make a special drink?

- Betas: for fun, for real, or for someone else?

- Pretty soon after though usually not my assignment. I try to get everything outlined/plotted in the first two weeks and then tackle them one by one.
- Absolute silence when writing.
- Sober. I've never seen a fic someone explicitly said they wrote while drunk/masturbating/whatever turn out well to my tastes. I really like writing first thing or just powering through all day and hitting 15k after working straight into the night.
- I get into at least two fandoms every Yuletide. Its also the only time I show up in namespace or beta for others.
- I appreciate betas and will always take someone up if they're willing but I'm secure enough in my writing where if I have to self-beta, the fic will still turn out well. I think people need less SPAG betas and more characterization/voice/pacing betas to help turn their fics from Cs to B+s and As.
- Not a Yuletide fic if you haven't canon reviewed multiple times. First one starts in "oh fuck can I do this" panic and finishes in "god I love this canon" and the rest are for you to relive your favorite bits just as much as to check voice/a small detail.

This might be the first year that I don't write a letter. I just...don't really feel like it. Would it be a dick move to leave a blank signup as an experiment? I'm just curious to see what I would get with a completely blank slate. I don't want to potentially ruin a writer's experience, though, so I'll probably add DNWs and maybe some favorite tropes at a minimum.

You already let people nominate rpf characters in any narrow enough "fandom", regardless of whether it's an actual fandom. Why do you then constrain the players to only those who have actually played for the team?
