The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

I haven’t done the Trick or Treat exchange for a few years and was thinking of participating this year, but WTF is with this tagset? If you’re going to add ship (both /and &) matching might as well scrap character matching while you're at it. Wanting the best of both worlds just makes the tagset a total eyesore.

Thinking about Psychonauts. There's a lot of cute art on twitter of the interns interacting with Raz's siblings and it's making me want fic.

Could you mark the discords 18+ please?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-07 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? A lot of exchanges that use "&" groups also give you the option to nominate characters alone.

old faves or all new?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
My slate of fandoms for the past few exchanges have all been Yuletide eligible, so I could basically just copy my signup (with some tweaks to account for the character matching). I worry people will get bored looking at my same signup all the time, though! Maybe I should try out a whole new slate of fandoms for Yuletide!

OTOH, most of the people in YT don't do other exchanges and won't have even seen most of my requests before.

Does anyone else angst about this? Tips, anecdotes?

Usually I do a mix. This year I think I’ll do all new-to-Yuletide but that I’ve requested in other fandoms before.

If you know you are able to write 2 fics, this is a perfect occasion to sock up. Your main requests the old and the sock asks for the new.

I always retire requests that have been filled, because it feels awkward to request something you already got (especially when you match the same person again.) I sometimes repeat others, but I also basically only do Yuletide. But I thin most people who do tons of exchanges are used to repeated signups, and most people who only do Yuletide don't care.

Do tweak it some though - there are enough people who only do Yuletide that things that are now SOP in letters in exchange culture may not be decipherable to a yuletide-only writer.

As a requester, I tend to switch out whichever request I most recently received a gift in, at a minimum - I'll usually rotate it back in within another exchange or two, but I like guaranteeing myself something I didn't get last time.

As a writer, though, I really love repeat requests in my fandoms! There are so many good ones, and I never have time to treat them all, so getting multiple cracks at them is awesome.

So maybe there will be somebody out there who sees your requests and thinks, "God, that again? Switch it up a little!" But there might be somebody else who's thinking, "Yesssss, they're asking for That Thing again, I didn't manage to finish anything the last two times but THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM." You never know! I wouldn't base your decision on what other people may or may not be thinking, but on your own feelings about your requests - are you bored with any of them? Maybe you want to swap some but keep asking for others? Maybe you're actually more and more enthused about that hypothetical new selection of fandoms, the more you think about it?

If you want to stick with your current lineup but you're worried your signup's not going to inspire somebody who's seen it several times already, you could also refresh your prompts/try to come up with some new likes for your likes list, if applicable. That way, even someone who's written for you before has something new to work with. Like, don't feel obliged to if you're in love with your requests the way they are and they've been netting you great gifts - but if your requests do feel stale to you, that might help!

Keep 'em if they're the fandoms you want most. But I agree with the other commenters that it's a good idea to read over your prompts and likes and make sure they're clear to someone who only does a few exchanges, and add likes or prompts or improve the formatting where you can.

I want tiny indie rpg games like Skyborn or Last Scenario, but I'm not sure anyone but me will either request or offer them...

Unrelatedly, if anyone ever wanted fic for any of the indie games that were in the giant itch.io racial justice bundle last year, you should nominate. And then mention that it's in the bundle on all the noms posts. I know I'm not the only yuletider who bought it and is still desperate for a way to prioritize.

That's the thing, I love them all and really want more fic just for them. I just know how much I enjoy browsing other people's shiny new requests for Yuletide, but maybe I will make my peace with my repeat requests this year, because every time I look at them I want them more.

ME. I will be requesting my usual brothercest ship and definitely trawling for possible sibling incest requests.
