Tamamizu! It's an inversion-like tale that sits in contrast to the more famous Tamamo-no-Mae (evil kitsune manifests as a female and marries many famous emperor like people over time) by being a story of a kitsune who falls in love with a young lady but knows they can't be with her and so manifests as a human female to become her lady in waiting. The kitsune eventually ends up doing all sorts of Good and Noble things and Pining A Lot before giving it up for the young lady's own good. It's a short story easily available online!
