The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

SC Actually, would it be worth writing to the mods to suggest they take out worldbuilding, considering the risk of getting 9/11 worldbuilding?

DC

I think that it would be reasonable to write for the mods, given that context!

I'd say that risk is close to zero, given the actual attacks took place 1,500 miles away from the setting of the canon.

So no, I'd say you should mind your own business and see what the worldbuilding nominator is planning to request with it.

The people I've known in my life who were the most OTT weird assholes about 9/11 lived 1000+ miles away from the attacks. Distance doesn't mean much when you're dealing with crazy.

You see this a lot, where the people who aren't directly involved with a thing turn into weird, overinvested assholes about it. The people up close have to deal with it and usually have mixed or nuanced feelings, people far away can get their Manichean thinking on and have a party.

It works for all sorts of things: 9/11, social justice topics, all forms of armchair experts, etc. It's just a thing people do.

It's not that someone living in Gander couldn't be a demented 9/11 obsessive, it's that worldbuilding set in Gander is unlikely to involve people living in New York City or Washington D.C.

Do you know what the canon is about? How would you take 9/11 out of the worldbuilding?

I would consider "9/11 worldbuilding" to be worldbuilding about the attacks themselves, either the terrorists planning and coordinating them or at a minimum something involving the victims. I assume that's what the coalie I replied to meant, and what they found objectionable.

Come From Away worldbuilding is presumably about the logistics of a small, fairly remote community accommodating a huge influx of stranded foreigners. 9/11 was the precipitating cause in this case, yes, but it could just as easily have been Eyjafjallajokull erupting or whatever. That kind of worldbuilding strikes me as completely unobjectionable, and far more likely to come up than someone using a Come From Away worldbuilding nomination as a back door to request Al Qaeda fic.

Nah.

No, leave it alone. There's a lot of other worldbuilding that can be done in that canon.
