when do you give up on a request?

Because I’m old, pre-Treating I might repeat a request if I didn’t get matched on it one year, but now that all the requests are out there for everyone to see, I tend to assume if no one grabbed it to treat that year they won’t be interested in it next year either. Therefore I end up having to request new fandoms every year because it feels like the old ones are burned unless I request something totally different.

Do you guys feel like that’s generally true? Or are there tons of people like me who make lists of treats they’d like to write and rarely have time to do anything more than their assignment?

nah, i tend to keep plugging at my old requests for as long as i want them. the only reason i'd get rid of a request is if i was no longer interested in it for whatever reason. when it comes to yuletide, there's always a chance that someone might join for the first time/notice your request for the first time and go 'oh hell yeah, i'd love to write this one!' and there's honestly no telling when that's going to happen. if you still want the fic, request it. chase your bliss

Best: someone took the time to watch through the bootleg recording i took of one of my beloved i-am-the-only-one-who's-a-fan-of-this theatre fandoms, and carefully constructed such a beautiful little fic for it, hitting all of my favorite parts. i cried that year, friends.

Worst: someone who was clearly, like, 15 picked up my pinch-hit, wrote a rambling author's note about how they didn't really know how to do Yuletide but they hoped I liked it, and wrote me 3k of absolute plotless garbage. It was well-intentioned but not well-written. I cried. but for a different reason.

Yes and no. I am in this boat.

However, my recipient, who was also my writer for the same auction, have basically made donations to the charity we were raising money for and shook hands on the fact that our fics would never be written, as we both suffered mental health crises at the same time, then the pandemic hit, and now there has been a bona fide tragedy in the fandom (real life, not fictional).

Coal, I have a friend who isn't a writer but is into a lot of tiny Yuletide-eligible fandoms. I'm more into Yuletide for writing than for gifts. Plus I feel awkward signing up to an exchange because I owe auction fic from a few years back.

I'm thinking about suggesting we sign up together where she writes the requests (and promises to comment) and I manage the offers and write a gift. I'd probably offer very different things than she's into so would probably transfer my work to a sock during the anon period.

Would you do this? What problems am I not thinking of?

I guess it could be an issue if I have to default and she is then barred from signing up again.

I wouldn't do this. Fandom events where you aren't expected to make a gift in order to get one (like [community profile] fandomgiftbasket) seem like a better fit for your friend.

Sometimes there are fandom auctions to raise money for charity. To get around exchanging money for fanworks, you don't pay the author/artist, you donate the money and provide a receipt. In exchange you're supposed to get a fic or art or vid or whatever.

Also, based on what I just had to disambiguate, to my surprise: someone else is nominating this extremely niche fandom! Hurray!

But they apparently did so by choosing to style the fandom in a very strange way that is extremely distant from the canonical AO3 tag. Possibly because they're trying to restrict matching to one specific segment of the canon? Sorry, unknown fellow traveler, but I want the exact same characters for the whole series.

Most of my fandoms up to now have had very predictable requests. This year I want to offer many characters in this one fandom which I can only write gen or a few very specific ships for, and there's a good possibility people will be asking for ships I can't write.
