Contact mods or no?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm a bit torn, coalies. On the one hand, I enjoy my fic--it's for a fandom I've been asking for for years now, and while it's short, the characterization is aces, and it doesn't hit any DNWs. My trouble is that it's only about one character, while I requested TWO characters.
The fic is almost entirely about Character A, while Character B barely has a walk-on cameo--they don't even have any dialogue!

So, does anyone have any idea how strict the current mods are in the interpretation of the "the fic has to involve all the characters your recip asked for" portion of the rules? I'm a little reluctant to complain about a fic I otherwise enjoyed--I know the mods work hard, and will probably be prioritizing other things--but I admit that I'm a bit miffed that this fic doesn't really meet what I think of as the spirit of the rules.

Oh my god you're so whiny. You liked the fic, so enjoy it.

Contact the mods; Yuletide is an AND matching exchange.

Just let it go. Tis the season.

Ignore the Coalie that called you whiny. I would contact the mods and ask them to talk to the author to make sure they get the concept of AND matching in the future, but maybe not insist on a new fic since you enjoyed it.

If it's enough to ruin your Yuletide, go to the mods now. If it's not enough to ruin your Yuletide, tell them right before/after author reveals as a heads-up to keep an eye on the author in the future.

Complain.

It’s anonymous. You will either get an APH that you can think of as a treat or the mods will tell you no dice, but they will let the author know.

The author knowing is the main thing imo. Them getting away with this stuff eventually leads to a wanky villain origin story (see: nobody saving heeroluva from himself by telling him to cut it out when he started off including non-problematic unrequested kinks)

The author won't get in 'trouble,' morbane and co. never go after anyone really. But they need to know.

It's not "getting the writer in trouble," wtf. What kind of trouble do coalies think the writer might be gotten into?? It's just to give the mods a heads up, and the mods can decide for themselves whether it's worth talking to the recip or not.

I would not contact. You'll just get the person in trouble.

But, yes, this is frustrating.

It can't be just me who's getting the *very* strong sense that recip and some commenters here WANT the person to get into trouble, right? It's creepy in a way I'm having trouble articulating, since we're talking about a story that the recip liked.

Oh no, being reminded that Yuletide has rules and what those rules are, how will they survive! If someone has managed to miss that Yuletide has AND matching, they should be reminded to not make this same mistake next round.

If I liked the fic well enough, I wouldn't go to the mods because why. However, you do have to ask yourself why do you care about the spirit of the rules so much. If the answer is because you hated your gift, then -> mods. If the answer is you're a stickler, then -> don't.

If you liked your gift, why would you file an official complaint about it and the author? That seems more against the spirit of any gift exchange than any issue you're describing.

Re: Contact mods or no?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If I were one of the mods and I knew you were filing a complaint about a gift you genuinely enjoyed solely to be a stickler for the rules, you're the one I'd ban from the exchange.

Definitely go the mods and let them decide if the fic is in the spirit of AND matching.

Re: Contact mods or no?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Stupid question, but isn't it kind of par for the course for people to say "you don't have to include all these characters in your gift"? I understand that Yuletide is AND matching, but it's likely that this is a genuine misunderstanding, because disclaimers like that are so common. Maybe flag the issue to the mods, so that it's something that can be addressed with more clarity in the future. If you enjoy the fic, reporting it is overkill. Starting a discussion about this issue is not.

Chiming in late to say that if I was in your position, I'd be happy to receive a fic I enjoyed and chalk up the character thing to very slightly bad luck and move on with my life. Imperfect fic is a normal part of Yuletide and this isn't a big enough rules violation to seem worth complaining about.

Re: Contact mods or no?

(Anonymous) 2019-12-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, let the mods know. The mods, honestly, will probably do nothing. But you will have made a good-faith effort to have the mods gently point out the rule so the author knows better when writing future fics.

Whiny. Arrogant. Spoiled.

Enjoy the gift. Write a NICE thank you comment. Be gracious. Stop being the most spoiled brat I've seen in a long time.

Some spent time, thought a lot and gave you a beautiful gift. Be thankful.

Contact the mods. You can tell them you don't want a fic replacement, but also suggest that they should remind the author of the rules. After that it's up to the mods.
